Izzy and Slash were so great together

Been on a big GnR kick lately. Although Axl is bit tough to listen to at times, the music and guitar interplay in particular are so good it's a moot point. Listening with headphones and being able to hear their individual parts better has give me an even greater appreciation for Slash's much busier, gainier parts and Izzy's laid back, lower gain complementary playing. I also believe the UYI albums sound much less dated than Appetite does, what say you?

I agree about how well they complimented each other but i think their playing was more unique on the AFD album.Alot of times they are playing similiar riffs/lines but played a bit differently. UYI is a great and amazing pair of records but like the band at the time it was bloated. A little bit too much at once with a good amount of filler thrown in between the good stuff.

I think it really kind of begins and ends with AFD. A lot of the stuff after seemed like an Axl-written rock opera. I just think AFD was stripped-down, greasy rock.

I still have yet to hear any of Izzy on Appetite. The only guitar I hear is Slash. I guess I just can't pick out the Izzy parts.

Have you listened with headphones? It's pretty easy to hear Izzy on AFD. The best is to listen through some powered monitors and just turn off the right (slash) monitor!

Izzy play the first half of the Nightrain solo, the "back in blackish" run in the main Mr Brownstone riff are the 2 most recognizable. I'd have to listen again for more.

Izzy's guitar playing is definitely on AFD. He plays the little dark finger picking part under the My Michelle intro as well. Love that part, makes that intro!
I can easily hear Izzy's parts in most of the tunes on AFD. Not so much on UYI albums.

Funny thing is Slash said he loved it when Gilby Clarke joined the band because he was a much better player than Izzy.

I think he also said something similar about Matt Sorum joining and being a much better drummer. As we all know, being a better musician doesn't always equate to a better listener experience or better music.
Given my experience with GNR, Gilby Clark has no where the creative juices that Izzy has. And who needed to be a great musician in GNR? I always held them in high regards for their sloppy punk side and not giving a F%*k. They kinda had that Replacement thing where things could be magical or they could possibly not make it through a song.
