I'm sure there will be the people here who disregard Jack White, but is there a guitarist out there that wouldn't have loved to have that first song? i didn't love his tone, but loved his attitude and they had a hell of a lot of fun. and that band is really good.

Well...that's kind of where we are at now..."shock rock"...it has to be loud, quirky, and full of odd ear candy. I mean, it's different...but like you said, not super likable AFA songs go.

Of course, that's been his trademark...kinda quirky music, for the most part.

KISS and Alice Cooper were called “shock rock” in the 70s.
Not sure if that applies to JW but his sense of arrangement and energy can be shocking if you are expecting something linear and conventional.

Yeah...those good old make-up and theatrics bands...they were shocking with their looks.
With JW...it's the music...as in "electric shock rock".

I don't think the opener is one of White's stronger songs--not bad at all, just not close to a top-shelf JW effort--but I loved the energy. What I've always appreciated most about his songwriting (which is also true of "Taking Me Back/Fear of the Dawn) is his knack for simple, catchy, rocking riffs. That's an increasingly lost art in rock.

Yes...he comes up with some interesting guitar riffs.

The music often has a jagged quality to it...which I think is by intention...and often the employment of strange noises...which at times comes off like "noise for the sake of originality", but you can't really strip those songs down, the ear candy is what holds them together...though maybe not all of his stuff.

I'm not a fan of his voice...also extremely quirky.
