So, anyone here like any Japanese bands? :phones

    THE PILLOWS
Saw these guys live in NYC 2 years ago. Show was insane!

    ASIAN KUNG-FU GENERATION

    CHATMONCHY

3 piece girl band. Saw them live in NYC a few years back. Had the pleasure of meeting them after the show as well. They were so humble and friendly.

    NUMBER GIRL

Guitarist Tabuchi Hisako is the reason I fell in love with Jazzmasters. I think she's great.

    SUPERCAR

There is a definitely a lack of videos for this band on youtube. Throughout the years, many of them have been deleted. This live set is entirely available in parts. So if you like em, there you go.

    TOE
An instrumental band. Sometimes they invite guest singers for some songs. They just recently announced they're touring Europe.

I'm a huge j-rock fan, i really hope to save enough money and go to Japan next summer and hopefully go to some gigs while i'm there too. Rock concerts in Japan look really fun.

We recently had a thread about Japanese guitarists and lots of cool Japanese bands/musicians were posted in that thread.
If you'd like to check it out, here's a link to it.

I posted most of my favourite bands there too.

I don't know if there's like... a site for Japanese youtube stuff that doesn't get deleted, because a lot of the stuff i found on youtube has been deleted because of copyright stuff.

I haven't been hip to the new stuff for about 10 years, but when I was younger, I was into a lot of bands from Japan.

    - Guitar Wolf : my favorite rock 'n' roll band of all time, best live performers on the planet

    - Solmania : amazing avant-garde guitar music

    - Keiji Haino : as above, more arty

    - Masonna : best pure noise artist in history, makes all his music with a microphone, a box full of coins, and some Marshall stacks. Also like his other projects Space Machine and Christine 23 Onna

    - Boredoms : the legends of avant-pop-tribal insanity

    - OOIOO : great pop Boredoms offshoot

    - Buffalo Daughter : "New Rock" is an all-time classic

    - Pizzicato Five : this retro-chic dance crew was so ahead of their time it's ridiculous. "Happy End of the World" is a desert-island disc

    - Ruins : Avant-garde metal masters

    - Corrupted : Pioneers of advanced sludge-doom music

    - The Gerogerigege : obscene performance art from insane person

    - Gauze : seminal punk music

    - Oblivians : Good old-fashioned rock 'r' roll

    - Shonen Knife : slightly twisted candy-rock

    - 5,6,7,8s : retro-B-52s style rock

the list goes on, but these are the ones that I was super into. I also dig Merzbow, but Masonna is a lot more rewarding for me most of the time when I want noise.

Hey thanks for that link :)

...and I'm not sure about a youtube for Japanese music. I wish there was. A lot of the stuff disappears constantly. Once they're gone, they're nearly impossible to track down again. It's tough.

I've heard of the 5,6,7,8s. they're great! Although as for everyone else on the list, they're new to me. I'm gonna check em out :beer

I directed a concert by X-Japan, does that count?
    They rocked.

BTW - love Japanese guitars...ESP, Edwards, etc..."Artist Series" guitars.

Envy doesn't get a ton of attention but they're absolutely one of the best post-metal/screamo bands around.

I'm going to hold out hope that it's more than just you and me that dig Coffins here. What's not to love about brash, groovy death doom?
