So my tax return will be here soon so I've got some dough for a new guitar. I'm thinking either a fender custom shop jazzmaster or getting an r4 or r6 goldtop with p90s. Anyone have any preferences?

What's holding me back from a Gibson is I know I will be worried about breaking the headstock constantly and I don't know if I would be able to enjoy the guitar.

Fwiw I'm playing a duesenberg starplayer and a strat into a matchless lightening so what ever you think would complement the doozy and strat.

A R6 would definitely be my choice, but I gotta admit that lately I've been thinking that maybe a Jazzmaster would be the Fender for me. In any case, they are different enough so there are many parameters for you to consider : tone, shape, scale, weight etc.
Avoid buying a Gibson just because of a potential headstock break seems extravagant to say the least. There have been countless musicians touring/gigging Gibsons for decades. Headstock break my ass. On a firebird or SG I might understand it, but a LP? Anyway...
BTW, here's a vid of Audley Freed playing a R6 into what seems like a Lightning :

Ya that audley freed video is what got me going on an r6

What's a goldtop r4 going for on the emporium?

p90s in an lp style guitar is a classic sound. thick and meaty.

but p90s'ish pickups in a jm are much more springy and responsive feeling, while also not quite as meaty or gutsy. still, love the feel and kinda makes the lp style feel almost sluggish.

    just me.

I wish i had your job

anyways....have you played a Jazzmaster before? I wouldn't worry about the headstock on the Gibson...its not like they're falling off left & right. Do you play out live? Or just around the house?

    They're TOTALLY different sounds.

The Starplayer has humbuckers? and you have a Strat?

The Gibson with P90s would be a better fit as far as a sound that you're not getting yet.

But Jazzmaster (ESPECIALLY a Custom Shop) is just sexy.

    You'll have to forgive me if I'm just a little biased . . .

I actually an just a waiter in a restaurant and am in school. I just got a give tax refund.

But I'm not super scared about the head stock but it would be in the back of my mind. My duesy has a p90 in the neck and a humbucker in the bridge.

I can totally get by with only my duesenberg but I would mind trying something new

Don't worry about the headstock. Single cut LP Special's are really nice too. But of the two you mentioned I'd go for the Paul. Damn I love p-90's.

Gotta go with the Les Paul. And I'm a big time Fender guy, too.
    It's just a better guitar.

Hmm... I know exactly what I'd have. A combo of both, jm shaped with p90's in it.

If only I knew 3 or 4 people off hand that do just that... lol
