I would go for any of the "Marshall in a box" overdrives. There are many around, just back off the gain.

    Lovepedal Purple Plexi maybe?

But it still won't sound like a cranked JCM.

The Purple Plexi isn't a bad choice. Another one that I really like is the Catalinbread Super Charged Overdrive. But yes, they won't sound nearly as good as a cranked JCM800 with the tubes cookin'.

The Hot British nails it through a clean amp.

I own a JCM800 single channel 50 watt and a Twin Reverb and I use an A/B switch live. I would like to downsize at certain shows.

I'm really hoping to get something that sounds more like the 50 watt single channel JCM800 and less like the 100 watt hair band sound.

Could I accomplish this with a Purple Plexi if I dial it in?

    Suggestions?

speaker choice will have more to do with getting the Marshall sound and feel from a pedal than anything else...

Dave no longer makes the SS, but the new Direct Drive incorporates all that it was and more. Reasonably priced too.
After I got tired of dragging around my 800 1/2 stack, I used the SS with my Maz jr with great success to achieve the right Marshall growl and chunk with much less weigh to bare.

I have the black lovepedal, ocd, sweet sound habanero boost, fulltone fat boost etc. the OCD is hard to beat. The lovepedal sounds great. By the way, I'm running these through a JCM800.
