Finally got my 1985 JCM800 2204 and 2x12 cab sorted.

While I'm experimenting with my new gear, I thought it would be fun to try some other settings.

So, post your settings and what guitar you use it with!!

isn't there like 3 knobs on the whole thing. My most unhelpful post ever but its not exactly a Mesa MKIV when it comes to tweakage.

You should ask about speaker combos, OD boosts etc.

You should maybe ask yourself why you posted in this thread?

I always used the Joe Perry settings everything on 7 and maybe a a little more of this or that for the room.

Mine right now is -

Presence - 5
bass - 4-5ish
Mid - 7
Highs - 6
master - 4
preamp - 5

With a 1960a cab and hit up front with a Keeley SD1

man that's a beautiful Les Paul!

I have the 2204 4010 combo

I use the low gain input on mine for a excellent clean tone.

Pre volume about 2-3 o'clock, master around 10-12 o'clock

treble 9-10 o'clock, mid 11-12 o'clock bass 2 o'clock presence 11 o'clock

something like that. Great barking clean tone with serious punch.

Fair point. But look at everyones suggestions. All in the same ballpark.

Bass full up, always.

Everything else adjusted depending on the room, the volume and the tone I want. Treble and presence rarely above 6 though.

I'm diggin that setup as well. Lots of punch and super fat. Then i'll hit that with an OCD.

BTW, I noticed Tag dug your clip in the big dumble thread....did you use the 800?

I use the high noon technique to gauge if an amp is any good....if it doesn't sound good like that, forget it!!

The settings I'm enjoying so far are
pres - off, bass- up full , mid - 1/2 up, treble - 1/4 up, pre amp - anywhere between 1/2 - full up, master up to 1/4 up and hotplated down to taste.
Sounds great with my dimarzio loaded hamer special and even greater with my rio loaded hamer jr. I think I need some dimarzios in ,y lp custom too!!
My old reliable ts9 sounds good too.

For the original poster, some settings. For the Mesa guy, there are different ways to work with ANY amp.

the following settings were given to me by a GP member and it's the best my JCM800 50 watter ever sounded:

Plug into the LOW input. Turn the master volume control to TEN. Use the preamp to control overall output volume.

Bass - 10
Midrange - 4
Treble - 2-4 (depending on how bright your 800 might be)
Presence - OFF

Settings will produce the thickest clean tone you've ever heard from a marshall. Use OD or Distortion pedals (in my case it's the MI Audio Crunch Box) to get some of the most powerful Marshall tones you've ever heard.

Good luck. Enjoy your amp. Have fun.

I own a 2205 from 1987 and would like to know about settings, also which combination of preamp tubes and power tubes tubes to get the best out of this unit...

PD: Own a Mark IVa combo with EV from 1991 and is a deferent beast

not me? I didn't post a clip, sorry.
My bad, I looked again and it wasn't your clip. I just thought it would have been pretty ironic if a JCM 800 won his Dumble tone quest!

Anyhow, I totally agree on the low inputs cleans with the right guitar. My Strat-type sounds huge in the low jack. I wish these were channel switching.

I have a 1982 JCM 800 2204 & 4x12 with Celestion 75 watt speakers:

Preamp: full up

Master: 8

Treble: 4

Mids: full up

Bass: full up

Presence: 2

I boost it with either a Maxon OD-9 or a Barber DDSS. As you can tell by my settings, I'm not playing mellow Jazz or Delta Blues, lol.

Cheers,

CJ
