Jeff Beck, on food

Saw this interesting/humorous quote in the recent GP interview:

"I get closer to who I am when I'm not eating. Food is distancing for me. You've got to be starving and really miserable, and then you play well."

Guess the show promoters love his band rider.......

Perhaps reading between the lines is in order here. Maybe he is using "eating" or "being well fed" as a metaphor for getting too fat, happy, and comfortable with one's playing. Being "hungry" with something to prove gives an "edge" to guitar playing.

Maybe not.

There was a similar comment from him about the Ronnie Scotts series of gigs that got filmed - something to the effect of barely eating for a week.

You definitely get the impression that Jeff likes to push out of his comfort zone, to stimulate his art.

I think I remember Steve Vai saying he would fast before recording so he would feel lighter.

I'm going with 'meh'.

When ya don't eat, blood sugar drops, and ya get cranky.

I can't get SH*T done when I'm hungry. Nor can I play a good show.

I'm not saying have a belly full of pizza and beer, but... SOMETHING.

I like to eat about 4 hours before a gig. My food is digested, I don't feel too full but I have energy to work off of.
same for me .... eating too close to a gig messes with my singing ... to even drink anything more than sipping water does the same

i usually get quite hungry mid-gig and usually need to have a little something ... so i take small bites, chew well, and hope for the best

I don't know about this... usually we eat/drink whatever the venue will provide. Which usually isn't gourmet, sometimes it's hardly edible stuff.
I LOVE sipping beer between numbers though (maybe a couple of pints a gig which is reasonable).
Then again we're not artists, and our van driver is on Evian (maybe he should play leads!)

thats all fine and dandy Jeff but please put some sleaves on or eat some meat/protein. You cant have it both ways: never eat and walk around dressed like The Situation.

This is by no means peculiar to Jeff Beck.

'Intermittent Fasting' has been practiced by people for years.

I have to say I agree with it too - often I won't eat a thing until mid afternoon, resulting in better concentration and alertness when it's needed most (ie first thing in the morning).

Another advantage is that it allows me to have a nice big meal in the evening, as I have plenty of 'spare' calories saved up by not eating during the day.
