    He was one of the best.

    Saw him a bunch of times in the 80s when he was playing small bars. Pretty intense show. I think a lot of volume is a big part of his sound.

    In researching this, I found others who claimed to know pretty definitely that JH always liked to play really loud, Marshalls in the earlier days and Fenders (Twin) later. Supposedly he liked the amp running pretty clean and used Boss pedals, even DOD, for drive.

    -Squier Strat>Wah (dunno)>Evans pups>Tubescreamer>Marshall>EV loaded 4-12-
    and a great command of his own technique

    Great command for sure!....I really prefer the tone he has in the 2007 clips I linked to his earlier tone, especially for the blues they're playing...I wonder if anything changed besides the amp...
