i went to a very cool private party last night on peanut island, riviera beach/palm beach...during the evening they took a few of us down into JFK'S underground bunker, built in '61 to house the president and up to 30 people in the event of a nuclear strike. they said he had been there 3 times for drills...i got to sit at his desk...the whole thing was pretty cool...very small area for 30 people, little bunk beds...bare bones...and geiger counters...anyone else ever check it out??

I used to party/ camp/ anchor at and around Peanut growing up in the area. Always heard there was a bunker there but we never actually went in it.

That was extremely cool--would love to visit.

On a semi-related note I just found out last night that there was a Nike missile bunker five miles from the house I grew up in.

    Did you ask why?

It's not like this is classified.

Interesting piece of history I did not know previously. And it's a manmade island too.

Nike had missiles??? No wonder they had a monopoly on athletic shoes in the 80's!

Haven't been there, but I did go on a tour of the large bunker built beneath the Greenbrier Resort in WVA. It was a well kept secret until the Washington Post broke the story on it in 1992.

It's quite extensive, and was large and complete enough to support the entire executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the government for quite some time. Has its own power plant, water and air purification, and other essential equipment. Awesome and creepy all at once. If you ever go there, it's totally worth a look.

Hah...commercialism rewrites history, love it. They gotta pay off the $13 million it took to turn the jungle like island into a de$ert over the course of 20 years and umpteen quagmired 'committees', my cousin worked there as a ranger, so bad he left a pretty cozy job...:bonk:messedup

I anchored off that island more times than I can remember during the 70's and 80's.

Let me tell you about that 'bunker' having been in it a few times, then.

It was a dark and dank overgrown little whole filled with water, see they didn't seal it properly, you know, dig three feet in Florida, even inland, you hit water.

It was the local running joke at the time, basically what good would it do him, unless he had scuba gear.

But the Presidential Seal and Wooden desk is a nice touch....LOL!
