Did you ever take an entire song, change the name, ditch the lyrics then pass it off as your own?

Because Jimmy Page did. There are multiple examples of this type of thing throughout their catalog. All they would have had to have done was credit songwriters but they never did. Instead they passed it off as their own. That is where they jumped the shark. Everyone cops licks, steals phrases etc. Just admit to it. Dont be a douche.

Disagree. Genius. And "The Rain Song" is following closely behind.

Actually, in most of the Zep cases, it was the lyrics/vocals that were the problems. Whole Lotta Love stole the vocals but the rest of the song is totally unique from the original.
And the Zep version is miles more badass, for what it's worth :)

LZ absolutely took songs written by others and claimed them as their own. About that there is no doubt.

    Such as?

As I recall it was more common in the alleged cases of plagiarism that Jimmy would write some music, and then Robert would reuse some lyrics from a blues tune.

"Dazed And Confused" is the most clearcut example of plagiarism, but hey--he didn't ditch the name or most of the lyrics on that one!

I don't think anybody has denied that, but it has nothing to do with "Stairway."

Interesting video for sure. I'm not so keen on the song myself, but I do love the solo.

I picked up an almost new tape of one of the earlier remasters of 4 at Goodwill for like $.50 a few months ago and sounds great. I was just listening to it on Saturday night and thinking how easy it is to forget or dismiss Stairway just based on hearing it almost hourly throughout the 80s. I just sat and enjoyed it almost like I knew that I was going to see this. I cannot remember the last time I had listened to it all the way through. It is certainly breathtaking as a complete composition. Watching and listening to Jimmy Page talk about this stuff is so engaging. I loved watching him listen to music in It Might get Loud.

That's a traditional song--Burt Jansch didn't write it. And if someone asked you to play "Black Mountain Side" and you played Burt's version of "Black Water Side", they'd say "You're...playing it wrong."

I believe that LZ had to go back and credit and pay at least some of the people that they ripped off.

If you don't believe in history, then......fine.

Check out Jimmy's reaction to this rendition ... he looks to me like a proud parent, that his baby (song) could inspire such joy in others.

IMO Jimmy Page is a musical genius. Stairway is not my fav Zep song but that solo section is pure magic.
You naysayers can only dream of coming up with a solo so perfect.

Sounds like he nicked the riff/sound, but a riff doesn't a song make. Stairway (like most Zep) is corny as hell but irresistible to me.

I think all guys that had pieces of music stolen should be thankful to LZ from turning what they made into magic. I had never heard about Spirit before this thread

Except for Jake Holmes that did a great job IMO. Howlin' Wolf was a great musician too but a different level, different time too
