Joe Bonamassa now owns Al Di Miola's 59 Les Paul?

I can see why some of those would be candidates for restoration or conversion. Some of these are pretty mangled. I have no problem with stripping and refinishing that candy apple red '59.

I suppose it somewhat depends on the historical significance and the story behind the guitar too. The guitar in the OP looks like it could be the one on the cover of Kiss My Axe, which happens to be my favorite Di Meola release.

Dude has about 400 guitars. What's the point?

I have 40 and less than a tenth the annual income Joe has, so I can see how it happens!

But I get your point, I'm fine with having as many as I can play even if it's only a few times a year, I don't think I'd hoard quite that many even if I had the resources.

I choose to let my living situation dictate how many I can own. I got up to about 20 something, but simply ran out of room....and I refuse to leave guitars in cases. I want them out and playable.
Just bought a new house which is looking like I may have slightly less space for guitars than before. So will need to cull a few. But it is hard as hell.

Strange part about that is he's on record saying that he isn't into celebrity-owned guitars (note he passed on the Ed King Redeye Burst, the Peter Green Burst and many other celeb Bursts in the years since he's been collecting these, and can easily afford one of these.

So he might not be passionate about keeping this black Burst in the same condition as Di Miola had it for years.

The Candy Apple Red '59 Burst that he had restored recently back to sunburst might set a precedent that he'll get this black one restored as well. I guess we'll see.

Burstamassa is a polarizing guy for sure, but he does take this things out on tour and play them, so it's not just a collection for the sake of collecting. Have to give him props for that.

    That's good to hear! ^^

There's no shortage of sunburst Les Pauls in the world, and given the provenance with this one it's cool to see it left alone. Looks good in black, anyway.

The before and after pics of the red guitar are nothing short of amazing!

Doesn't look like a SD to me; I'd rather think Joe actually replaced the double black (higher output?) pickup that was in the guitar from Al by a new (old?) double white more classic PAF.

If I’m not mistaken, AD’s original LP was a 68’ deluxe painted black with added HBuckers. If you look at that pic, it’s a rosewood fingerboard. Which would be correct.

So this guitar wasn't black from the factory, right?

    When was it re-finished?

I think he got one of those new Prism LPs that look like his prism PRS. He doesn’t need that old 1959 guitar any more.

I would imagine that the double cream he's put in there would be a vintage, period correct PAF for sure.
