I know his live rig is always changing and he uses plexi, jtm45 and marshall majors. But what are the fenders he sometimes has stacked on top of his amps? I'm not too familiar with fenders at all, but one has cream/white tolex and it was a head and the other was a blackface combo..

Does he use his fenders for cleans or does he drive them?
I've even seen an ac30 up there as well...

Joe's got a pretty cool tone because of all the amps he mixes in, I read an article once that said he mixes a bunch of stuff in at once.. BUt I think his best tone was on the nine lives tour when he used wizard joe perry signature heads with the marshall cabs..

I have usually seen him with Fender Tonemaster heads.

Those are Fender Twins he had on top of his 4x12's for the 9 lives tour. Rumor had it he his them behind his stacks of Gibson Gold tone amps as well.

I don't know how much money gibson stuffed into his pockets to put those pieces of junk up on stage, but the whole tour with those amps sounded horrible. I don't know if he got back into heroin and needed some extra $$$ or something but that was his worst tone.

Now no pointing the finger at Joe...He's been sober for a number of years now.........but on the amp front....
Our band The Motor Kings played a gig with Cheap Trick, and Rick Neilson had about 6 full stacks of those horrid Gibson amps..[and he was using them]...god they sounded horrible.....and Rick was always known for that classic Marshall tone....NOT ANY MORE
At that time [pre Aiken days] I had a Germino Lead 55 head with a 2/12 Earcandy cab, and Robin Zander came up to me afterwards and complimented me up and down for my sound... it probably was $$$...or they were free

I was just kidding about the drugs, but it just doesn't make any sense for joe to be using trash like that when he's got wizards and marshalls collecting dust!

I wonder what Joe used around the 1980-1982 period with the Joe Perry Project. He had a strat with Bill Lawrence pickups and a lefty tele neck.

I seen Cheap trick this summer and the gibson stacks are fake. They are actually lights that light up when he hits a pedal. Here is a picture of his rack Its the one with the sf drs.The Hiwatts belong to the other guy the singer. I think his name is robin.

I saw him open for Alice Cooper during this period,he was using Musicman.
Had a bunch of them, all labeled for different uses-"talkbox" is the only label I can remember.

fjam , it didn't make any sense to me either...
In the early 80's with The Joe Perry Project, Joe was using his Aerosmith Music Man 135 amps that Andy Topeka customized for him....of note was a graphic EQ that was added to the front panel...He later on started using an original Bedrock 1200 designed by Brad Jetter..

I don't know what he used the Tonemasters for. I know his tone sure sounded better than with that wall of Gibsons.

I saw Joe Perry in 1982 in the Joe Perry Project at Hawmakers in Palatine, IL. He was playing through a huge rack loaded with MXR stuff. He came out loaded and started playing his guitar, it was all out of tune and he fell backwards into the drums. He was a mess, they took him off stage and canceled the gig for that night, of course the club didn't refund any money.

What happened to Rick Neilson playing Rivera amps?
