Love those first chords , and the overall sound of the guitar on that song ...

Thought I saw he used an old Fender, but must have had some front end distortion box to get that sound ?

Wasn't it the Tweed Bandmaster he ended up giving to Pete Townsend? A '58 or '59 I think? Townsend used it on Who's Next and Quadrephenia.

I always heard that it was a Les Paul and a Fender Champ.

    That sounds reasonable.

I have this old Guitar Player magazine stored away somewhere and in the article he talks about using Super Reverbs modified for more gain during that period. No mention of any gain pedals that I recall.

I saw him live after that album was released, he used a Les Paul and Super Reverb.

Perhaps. But that sound to me sounds like a smaller amp than a SR. I was thinking the Bandmaster or even the Champ. But who knows?

Looks like he's playing the Super Reverbs here and it sounds pretty close IMO. In the GP article it states that Joe (he has a degree in electronics)
modded his Super Reverbs for more gain. No idea if he's using any pedals in front??

Champs were used in his James Gang days but I think he had moved on by the time RMW was recorded.

If he used that Bandmaster he borrowed it back from Townsend because Who's Next and I think Quadrophenia were before Rocky Mountain Way.

No doubt he would use whatever. Long ago I read him saying he just plugged stuff in to see what works, like any of us.
He also described turning up the pot inside one of these old Tel Ray Fender echoes for more tube grit. Funny thing I'd been doing that too since I had scored a pair of them way back when.

    Bet that's true too.
