What is unique about Fender's John Cruz pickups?

I don't know for sure, but they sound great! His pickups in the Wildwood 10 Strats sound superb in all positions. They have a stronger mid-range voice and are wound slightly hotter than the CS 50 or 60 Strat pickups, but there is none of the harshness that Texas Specials can exhibit. I suspect that they would be among the best selling Strat pickup sets if they were available as aftermarket replacements.

So are the pickups in the SRV signature strat overwound as compared to the pickups in the 60's time machine strats? I've heard the SRV pickups can be harsh. Never really heard them though...

He may or may not. Point is Fender has a product called John Cruz pickups and I was wondering what their uniqueness is all about.

Interesting, are they an aftermarket item or in a Masterbuilt only?

I have a WW 10" Fender CS relic, and it has the John Cruz pups. I called Wildwood, and the Fender CS to find out more about these very sweet pups. Here is what I was told by Wildwood, they at first believed them to be a 60's style pup. But when they compared them it was not a match. They compared them to the Texas Specials and it was not a match because the Cruz pups were smoother. They then compared them to the SRV CS #1 that had a limited run, J Cruz was the builder and had met with J Vaughn and took apart SRVs real number one for that run. They believe that is the closest they have come with a match. The Fender CS said they were John Cruzes design and did not know what he really based them on, except they were a vintage design. Wildwood told me that many that own or played a WW10" wanted to buy the pups for other guitars and under no circumstances will they, or the custom shop do that. To bad because they are a very sweet pup. I love mine!

I can only ad that I have a J Cruz MB Strat and there the best strat pups I've had, but for the price they get for Masterbuilts they better be that good!.

I heard Mr. Cruz was inspired by a set of pickups he has and had Fender use that as a benchmark.

I heard they appeared on cruz's workbench one afternoon with a note that said to say alnico 3 times and they would be the best pickups ever. I actually think that the magnets are made from moon dust and if they are removed from their original guitars that they will desinegrate into thin air... But then again I could be wrong???
