I don’t often watch The Voice, but happened to last night. At one point in the show John Legend and his protege do a cover of Rocket Man. I’ve always loved that song so I was kinda psyched to see them perform it. Not a huge John Legend fan, but the cat can obviously sing and play, and you would figure he’d do a song like that proper justice. Evidently, he doesn’t believe the “less is more” approach applies to vocals. Starts out ok, but...

Trying way to hard. Keys wonky. That's my take.

This cover of Madman surprised me. I like it.

What’s with the awful “yeah” at 00:34? It’s just...stupid sounding, for lack of a better phrase.

    Here's my advice:

Don't watch silly reality TV shows.

    Ever.

The guy who ended up winning The Voice has a killer voice. He performed “The Authority Song” with Blake Shelton and made Shelton sound like an amateur.

This is why I hate "the Voice" and all similar shows. Everything has to impress the judges, vocal chops set to 11, emotion cranked to sickly, and it has to be now or you'll be kicked off the show. Totally antithetical to musical creativeness. For what it's worth, I'd give about anything for a voice like either of these guys. I wouldn't say he vomited over it... it just seems to me like he tried to make it more impressive and lost the vibe of the song in the second half. Still a very professional execution of all the skills, but not a great cover.

As long as talent-shows-on-steroids is defining the emerging talent, we'll discover plenty of exceptional singers, but very little uniquely creative music.

Hahaha. Just wrong genre. I used to put that kind of joke inflection in when singing lullabies to my kids years ago. Kids still roll their eyes at me for that stuff.

I like the kid singing it, and Legend is OK but it sounds like a gospel rendition. This wasn't that bad. The duet is too busy. I've heard much worse on those shows (when I visit home, my folks love them).

I don’t think it was horrible, but not good.

Flotsam and Jetsam had fun with 'Saturday Night is All Right for Fighting' way back in the old days and while its unelevated silliness, it's fun in a thrashy way. I enjoyed it.

I just can't believe the singing shows still exist - I think I might be missing a critical gene that allows people to enjoy singers covering songs.

They always just gave me bad flashbacks to being in a car in highschool with a theater/choir student trying to impress everyone.
