If this holds true it looks like John Mayer is going to release a country album. I know a lot of his fans might think that sucks because they want him to keep making either Room for Squares or Continuum over and over again, but I personally think it's awesome to see such a terrific player expand his horizons.

I'll be interested to see how the album turns out.

Sounds really cool to me kinda that early 70's California country rock.

    Uh, WTF?

Every album is a pretty big departure from the one before it. To even suggest he's been heading in the direction of R4S or Continuum with his last two records is a read head-scratcher.

I'm not a huge JM fan but I can dig some of his stuff, and his tributes to SRV. I think this might just be the best thing he's done yet.

That clip sounds great. I love the pedal steel, but that song doesn't sound country to me.

I don't know, I think it was all growing stylistically towards Continuum and then Battle Studies was the big departure. At any rate, my point was that there are a lot of JM fans that can't get over those two albums, but I personally like the idea of JM doing a "70s Country Rock" or "Modern Country" album.

I'm excited for the new album. He's played a couple of his new songs on shows. 'Something like Olivia' sounds pretty awesome. He's really going in the direction of "who says" sorta vibe. Probably doesn't fancy the blues wankers here but its refreshing and simple.

I thought I heard the that the full song was to be released on the radio today. Cant wait. I really liked battle studies, and I like his new direction, seems like it is more of a throwback to 70's California sound, kinda like the "country" sounds of the Eagles, Nicks/Buckingham Fleetwood mac, Neil Young, Jackson Browne, the Band, we will see, but I am definitely ready for some new Mayer material.

Just heard it on the radio. Not what I was expecting after hearing the little clip he posted on his blog. Different from most stuff on the radio these days. Almost a bit George Harrison / All Things Must Pass-esque in places.

This man wants to do everything. Hats off..

The pedal steel is what gives it the countryish sound. Today's country is very pop afterall.

    Cool tune.

I really dig where he's going with his career. He's not afraid to change and grow. I know most people around here want him to keep remaking Continuum, but I really felt his last record was one of the best "records" he ever made. It had such a great arch and flow and wasn't just a collection of singles.

I can't wait to hear the whole album.

Very nice... looking forward to it. He puts out good/great songs no matter what style he's doing, I'm sure this will be no exception.

    Country?

Nothing country about that other than a little pedal steel.

Pedal steel doesn't make a song "country".

The solo is def a George Harrison nod.

    "I'm a good man with a good heart" ?

The main riff DOES sound like Main Street by Bob Seger! Good call.

Agreed, people seem to have forgotten the art form that is an entire record. You look at what sells at the moment and it's basically 11 or 12 individual songs that don't tie in with anything of the the other tunes.
