Just watched the CrossRoads DVD and wondering if anyone knows what pedal Mayer's using to drive his amps to get that throaty neck pick up tone? I've read in the past threads that he uses TS808's/ TS-10's - Keeley stuff and the original Blued Breaker pedal - but does anyone know what he's using on that DVD as a comparison?

    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure it's a pedal. Isn't he using a Two Rock and a Dumble. Both will do that throaty thang.

quite honestly, i can pull that off with my blues junior and a keeley blues driver. . . or any one of four screamers i have. . . though i prefer the blues driver. . . it really seems to happen within the 10th-14th frets the most. also, i use passive/lower output pickups. . . which i personally think helps. . . and, if i remember correctly, he does as well.

One of Mayer's new "toys" that he has been using quite a bit and it has been on his board since May/June is a ZenDrive 2, as well as a Zendrive. According to Rene, "the Zendrive is on all the time."

I've been tweeking my LTD.SR mod board this evening and between that into my Klon - I'm pretty much nailing it... The note shape all the way up and backing off on the Mids trim on the LTD.sr and then into the Klon set mostley for Volume Boost but with a hair of drive - Into my Cowtipper sounds great... Orogeny is right on - lower output pick ups do help...

I think it would be the G2D Creamtone pedal

http://g2d.co.nz/main.php :"Thanks, John Mayer for buying the G2D Cream-Tone. G2D"

    Weird alignment here...

I've been using my Zen2 for a while now as my main OD, and I've got a regular Zen due today, for a two Zen setup. Damn, Mayer beat me to it....

He uses a Keeley Katana a lot, I bought one and I've been using it with my Bogner Shiva for a while now. If you crank it (and that's what he does), you get a pretty heavy OD rhythm tone!

The tone on the "Belief" solo is downright sick. Sounds like an 808 to me, but I definitely could be wrong.

Definitely check out that Katana, it has a 20 dB boost with extra gain, sounds amazing!

I just had a quick scan through the DVD and I watched the Mayer clip. There's a very brief shot of his board during what looked like rehearsal footage and I could pick out a TS-808 & a Pedal Power. Didn't go back & freeze frame it though :)

I'm looking at the katana for use as a boost for sure, but I'm not convinced that it affects his tone (or anyone's tone) all that much. That OD sounds too 808'ish to be from a boost pedal (IMO).

I'm thinking of doing the keeley katana/compressor combo.

He does use a Katana Boost with his Trio... not sure if it was on Crossroads
