No matter how many times I hear the solo it never gets old.

I love that scoopy tone - what am I hearing that gets him there?

I'm one of those people. To me, that's about as good as it gets.

I started playing a strat when that song was released, and have spent most of my time playing to that tone.

Took me a while, but i get it really via a nice clean amp (i use a Big White Monkey Silverback) with some mild reverb to touch (Hermida Audio for me) and a Strat on the second pickup selection.

Most importantly though, i play entirely with my fingers. Like, no guitar pick along with importance on the vibrato.

    Hope that helps!

I think the "In Repair" tone was the best from that album.

Though "Bold as Love" is right next to it also.

    And Slow Dancing... lol

    So many great tones!

He admits that selector position 4 is where he spends most of his time...........

2 and 4 mostly for sure. Though he uses the neck pup also from time to time (Slow Dancing verse, 2/4 for solo)

This is it. A decent BF or SF reverb amp, maybe a boost of some sort depending on your volume levels, a decent strat, no pick, and some talent.

I teach a lot of students at Berklee. Most of them really dig John Mayer, BB King, SRV etc. This song is all about how John plays his guitar. Very nice to hear that one of my former students can inspire my upcoming new students who want to be ....

Yep, that'll get you 95% of the way there. The last 5% will cost you a few grand (for a Two-Rock).

Does anyone know what effect John Mayer is using on this version of Gravity? It is subtle, but it still sounds like some effect is being used.

Agreed, great tone. His tone is impeccable on everything he does basically. Not to reroute the conversation but this gets my vote for some of the best blues guitar tone like ever in history. I think he's playing a 335 into the Two Rock 100 watt. So much harmonic content.

Wow, this is very refreshing!! No Mayer haters posting yet. I'm a big fan of Mayer's tone as well, and Gravity is a great song.

I think Belief was the song that got me. Love the tones on that tune.

I heard him interviewed once and he said he liked to hear "patience" in a guitar player. That struck me. I can hear him apply that principle, simple as it is, to a lot of his playing.

Tones have been awesome for a long time.
