Every so often I allow myself to forget about John Moreland. And then he pops up out of nowhere and I fall in love with his songs all over again.

Goes to show: an acoustic guitar, the right words and the right performer can be pure magic.

Years ago I was asked to record a vocal track for a friend's solo record. After it was released, many of the guests convened out in Oklahoma for a release show. I met John then, he also sang on the record.
I really love his earlier stuff with a full electric band. He played Austin with that lineup and they really came across well.
Check out 'Bastards of the Highway' with his Black Gold Band.
Of course, his solo stuff is great too.

Thanks! Didn't know about that band. Much appreciated.

I listened to every album he has on Amazon Prime (several) one day. At some point I noticed his vocals sound a lot like Springsteen. Once I noticed that I couldn't shake it and kind of lost interest.

I've told everybody about him since I saw him open up for Jason Isbell a couple of years ago.
I love his " In the throes" album but all his solo albums are worth a spin.

Springsteen? Yeah sure. There's also a lot of Steve Earle in his songs.

Good grief, this is so good... that I played it three times in a row already.

Just realized Johns playing a gig at a local record shop (yes they still exist). Sold out already. Bummer :(

    Good for John

I'm a big fan. It appears that he's getting his personal life together and consequently writing less from a "sad sack" perspective, which is why I like his newer stuff a bit more than the earlier songs. Another John who's a great songwriter and singer in a similar vein is John Fullbright.

Worked well for Jason Isbell, for whom he opened in the past :)

I bought a couple of his records on the recommendation of a friend. I noticed the same imagery over and over...can't recall what it was, something about angels? Ghosts? Ghost angels? I dunno. Didn't really hook me as anything super original or clever.

He's on a double bill here with Deer Tick next month, and I'm definitely going. Maybe it'll grab me more to hear the songs live.

The other thing is, that man creates that beautiful, fingerpicked sonic tapestry with only his thumb and index finger, far as I can tell...

Wow. I have to say that it’s really humbling to realize the amount of sheer talent that’s out there in the world. Never heard of this gentleman before and now I’m gonna have to do a deep dive into his stuff. Thanks once again, mojocaster. You’ve been on a roll lately.
