Don't think this is very controversial, just heard Hurt on CBC and can't make up my own mind who's version I like better. Anyone?

I wouldn't say one is better than the other. Trent wrote the tune and his original recorded version is amazing,...dark beauty at it's finest. Johnny Cash's took the tune, did something different, made it his own but kept that core sentiment and mood with the music. You could even argue the lyrical content was more applicable to where he had arrived in life at that particular time.

    I love both,...equally.

This is a tough one. .. Cash's version of Hurt brought me to tears. Its just one of the greatest songs ever written. If you can relate to the subject matter it takes the tune it to a whole different level which is why the cover was so good. The arrangement of the original is so haunting though... Its a toss up. I like both for different reasons but Cash's version touches me more.

Such a good song. I am much more likely to play a NIN track over any work by Cash. In this case a prefer Cash's version.

Trent wrote a great song, Johnny sang a great song. The whole Johnny Cash thing, age, deep voice, just fit the tune amazingly.

Honestly I think the version that Johnny did was one of the greatest cover songs I've ever heard. His version to me seems to have so much depth and pain and it really sounds like a new song.

Kermit has an amazing ability to sound like he's using a plectrum,
but as you can see in the video that he just uses his fingers,
    must be his frog skin?

Trent has said the following about the video/song: “I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. [I felt like] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. "

I like the Cash version better - when you throw in the video there is no comparison for me. Cash all the way. Even Trent says the song is really JC's now.
