Anyone else a fan of Mr. Marr? I don't know why, but I really enjoy hearing him talk about guitars and amps, and even his early stories. He's one of the main reasons I started playing guitar

Saw The Smiths at the Tower Theatre in Phila on the Meat Is Murder tour. Just the original 4 of them - no extra players - was magical.

Do a search - Marr has some fans here.

Top 10 (maybe 5) player for me. I can't play a thing like him and I've yet to hear anyone else who does.

Andy Summers is the reason I started listening to the guitar, Johnny Marr is the reason I picked up the guitar.

Funnily enough I was just listening to Hatful Of Hollow (Johnny Marr Remaster), still my favourite JM recordings!

Hatful of Hollow is always playing in my car. Seriously, I haven't taken out that CD from my disc player in a year and a half haha

I can play a few songs by The Smiths, it just never sounds as good. Quite a common problem :rotflmao

Johnny Marr is one of my all time favorite guitarists. The Rhino records Smiths box set is fabulous.

His playing with The Smiths was a revelation to me in that it was so different than the other indie/college/alternative/postpunk/punk/hardcore/new wave/ska stuff that I was primarily listening to at the time.

Fabulous songwriter, keen melodic sense, tasteful player, wonderful user of effects. What's not to like?

I've been listening to him since the mid 80s, and trying to play some of those tunes just about that long (especially Smiths and The The material). Never been satisfied with how they sound in my hands.

However, I definitely suggest looking for live versions to try to play, because the studio work is so layered that one guitar is unlikely to ever sound satisfactory.

Yeah, that's probably a good idea. I've been using backing tracks from TheSmithsonguitar, but I never feel like I'm playing anything correctly. I'll start using live tracks to go along with Johnny and take it from there.

When I first started playing guitar, imagine how crushed I was to try and play Smiths songs and never achieve the same sound haha I almost wanted to completely quit playing. I'm really glad I didn't.

i love Marr/The Smiths... hadn't actually listened to them in several years, then on impulse just bought the entire Marr remaster discography a few weeks ago on a PopMarket deal.

i've been playing it non-stop. not only is Marr a genius, but i'm finally beginning to appreciate Morrisey's senses of wit and melody. i used to find him a necessary annoyance i had to put up with to listen to a brilliant guitarist.

I like Marr a lot too, great & very original player, imo. I saw the smiths on the 'Meat is Murder' too many years ago. They're on of tne of the few 80's alt bands that i think really had an original sound going.

Just wondering, how much did you pay for it? I had no idea about the popmarket site, but I'm going to keep a look out for when the smiths pops up again. Thanks :beer

WHAAATT!?? Johnny Marr is probably my favorite guitarist of all time, but Morrissey is every bit as unique a talent: the lyrics, melody, vocalization, charisma... They complemented each other perfectly.

Marr is the man! I've been hearing his influence quite a lot lately with some modern bands, most notably 'real estate' from NJ

no, not that one... i don't have the space for that! it's the Rhino complete collection... you can still get it on PopMarket, but it's not as cheap as it was. it's $60 now; i got it for $45:

yeah, i'm getting that now. but when i was an angst-ridden teen steeped in 80s post-punk blowing my hair out of my face, i didn't grok Morrissey.
