I taught him in 4th and 5th grade. He was always quiet and I tried to engage him and make him laugh. He did from time to time but it was hard to make him laugh.

Usually I can make anyone laugh and engage. He was a hard one to make smile.

He was in college and used drugs to do the deed.

I am crushed. I dont want to share with anyone I know because it feels too personal but you faceless assholes are good enough for me to vent to.

Thanks for a safe place to say stuff to people I love but do not know.

    Gonna cry hard now.

Sorry for your loss. I wish I had words of solace to offer, but there really aren't any. Crying strikes me as a great idea.

It's not your fault nor your responsibility.

Sorry to hear of your loss though. There was nothing you could do.

Man, sorry to hear that. At least you were a positive light in his life during that period. We can try with all our might to overpower the darkness that engulfs others, but the truth is sometimes we lose that struggle... still, never surrender.

I hope you find peace about this.

Mojo sent your way man. Suicide of someone you know personally is a sad, vexing, haunting thing.

Hang in there .... sounds like you did your best to make a difference in his life. Such a shame to hear about anyone taking their own life .....

    Sorry for your loss.

I know you are a teacher and that's the issue. I remember someone saying once the change that happens when they aren't your students they are your "kids." It's a serious bond that forms.

We get into the job to save them all and it hurts when you can't. We have had four 8th graders lose a parent this year. Very hard to see them go through that.

I can't say anything that'll make it better. You go cry as hard as you want, or listen to the saddest music you want.

    sad.
Just as sad is that everyone you meet day in and day out has most likely been affected by suicide at some time. No one escapes the loss.

I feel your pain. I lost a college guitar student a few years back. His Jim Morrison/Sid Barrett fascination was a tell tale sign. He dropped out and OD'd. It's shocking and so sad.
I hope time heals your heart.

Suicide is a hard one. Take care of yourself, and honour your own feelings.

Wow, so sorry to hear man.

As a private lessons teacher I know how close your students get to your heart. I know it's tough now but at some point remind yourself what a positive impact you get to make in people's lives with your job. Life can be brutal and you get to help people manage stress, learn how to learn, feel happy and help make other people happy with their music. That's a really good thing to be doing.

    Again, so sorry.

Kudos to you for caring, then and now
Some people are just carrying too much pain to live, some are just not a good fit for the world they were born into.
Some people are very sensitive too, too much so for the abrasive world, and it fits that musicians are probably over-represented in suicide stats.

Suicide is always tough on the survivors. I've had 2 friends and 1 loved one pass at their own hands. I'll never understand why they chose a permanent solution to a temporary problem. God bless you, brother.

Yep my wife often says I am too sensitive. But the alternative is being a stone.

    Thanks again.

It will probably happen again. Since I have taught so long.

14 years so far. Maybe I am lucky this is the first one.
