My Local Gibson just told me that there will be no more Ebony on les paul custom fret boards. They will be rosewood or maple. apparently maple is closer to ebony than rosewood. Actually a maple neck on a custom sounds pretty cool!
im guessing because its an endangered wood?
    any one else hear this?

Are you sure they weren't just referring to the Classic Custom model?

They probably don't have enough rosewood to use it on the Customs since they can barely get enough for the other models at this time it seems.

This is the second time around for Gibson. They simply failed to keep proper records and got in Dutch with the Gov. It's not an endangered species issue. Every other American guitar maker is getting ebony legally and having no problems. It is also difficult to understand at the current outrageous Gibson prices why a company like Agile can deliver a high quality LP with real ebony finger board and genuine mother of pearl inlays for $425 while Gibson claims they must resort to burnt maple and laminated fret board with cheap plastic mother of toilet seat inlays at 10 times that price. I expect the next move by Gibson will be bodies and necks made of recycled Douglas Fir 2X4's salvaged from construction sites. In the end it's just another cheesy Gibson cost cutting move. No down side in it all for Gibson though. Now that the Gov. has taken Gibsons supply of ebony Gibson will simply write off that loss and get the $ back by selling us lower cost woods at the same and eventually higher prices and claiming all the while that it's all the big bad governments fault. Once again with Gibson the only real losers are their customers.

gibson is being watched closely (audited) because of lacy act violations. They are trying to keep up with demands on their premium guitars by using "marketing honey" to sell nontraditional woods on their guitars. To me, I wouldn't pay a dime for an LP custom that didn't have its' traditional woods because they are grossly overpriced to begin with.

Not an LP Custom, but the new Epi ES-355 has ebony.

Oh, please tell me this is true! As if my recently-purchased '74 Custom wasn't cool enough already (not to mention $1600 less than a brand-new Custom)!!!! :D

So, does this mean that my two Gibson LP guitars that were quality made with dark hard wood will increase in dollar value ?
Not that I would ever consider selling them, unless I died of course !
