Bought a 1999 LP Classic with a beautiful amber top off E-bay. Nice weight, pretty good tone, but not the best especially with the stock pups and wiring.

Also it really smelled like acetone. Even after 5 days of airing out.

So beautiful though. It was really hard to pack it up.

You're lucky the seller took it back. Was it a music store with a return policy?

Well I can't hock them on TGP, so what's a guy with a stinky guitar to do??!? ;-)

As for the OP, I'm sure you werent expecting any stank but sub-par pickups and wiring in a Les Paul aren't really a major surprise; are they? Sometimes the gits just don't work out, you're lucky they took it back and good luck looking for a non-stinky axe... ;-)

I have a'99 classic and when i first got for a few years there was a distinct smell from the guitar's finish every time I opened the case. Not sure I would describe it as acetone, and it didn't really bother me. I just assumed it was the guitar's finish off-gassing.

Thats nitro. I like the smell personally (but its toxic so dont huff it).

As for pickups, the Classics came stock with hot ceramics. Not my favorite bridge position pup, the neck isn't bad.

SO you returned it because it wasn't covered in plastic and smelled like nitro as a result, and because you didn't want to change the stock pickups? Even though you say it looked good and sounded pretty good even with the ceramics?

For Real? Whats your ebay user ID so I can block you please. No offense.
