I used to watch KAJ as a kid when he played with the Bucks and I always remembered his hook shot. It seems nearly impossible to block if done right. Was it really that hard that no one has been able to improve on it or use it the way KAJ did?
I'm not a big basketball fan but a friend and I were talking about it yesterday and I was curious.

Exactly. Why risk an injury and/or foul, when you can just drop those outside 3 pointers? Hooks are great and it takes serious skill to make the moves, avoid injury or a foul for 2-points. But, (an aside) why couldn't a sweet hook be worth 3 points, too? It would sure fan the flames down the lane to the basket. Just sayin'. Peace.

As Bill Simmons calls it, "Pace and Space" is the name of the game now. Drive to the basket and finish at the rim, get fouled, or kick to a 3-point shooter. Analytics has shown this to be the most statistically efficient way to play the game in today's NBA.

Look how tall he is and how long his arms are, there aren't too many guys with that build. Shorter guys would likely get blocked a lot.

It's rare that big men today master conventional and more basic post moves. The full hook shot takes a lot of work to master.

Because it would take skill and patience to be able to do it. And today's game is all about 19 year olds that slamma jamma with a four step running start.

He was such a unique talent.
They could only play man-to-man during his career, so he could set and back his defender down methodically. Now with zone play, an extra defender renders that ability less likely.
Magic's hook shot was one that could translate better in todays game, still dont see it much though

Best player I've ever seen. Bird and Jordan can fight it out for second place... ;)

its his shot...from now until the end of time
whenever someone does a sky hook
they talk about KAJ. These guys have huge egos
    and want their own thing.

The Sky Hook as executed by Kareem Abdul Jabbar is a thing of beauty. "The big man fakes left, sky hook right, two points"

I never forget going to Nets vs Laker game and Kareem was out of position, top the of key and threw in possibly the longest sky hook to win game.
