Hi all, Just wondering what people are using in their Komet 60's for tubes. Preamp and Power tubes. I am also interested to see what the amp ships with.

    Thanks,

I use Tesla (non-JJ) preamp 12AX7 tubes, and Svetlana EL34 Winged C power tubes. It shipped with the Svetlana power tubes, but I replaced several current preamp 12AX7s with the Teslas. I think the original preamp tubes were Sovtek and EH.

Replace the rectifier with a Mullard NOS. Preamp tube replacements are a matter of taste and resources. The winged Svetlana outputs are fine tubes, can be replaced, but definitely getting into the area of dimishing returns.

I use all Mullard NOS in mine. If you can swing the $, it is well worth the price in tone and longevity.

I have 4 matched pairs of Mullards mostly XF2 and XF3, I'll try them. Thanks! Anybody else want to "chime" in?:)

Check out the NOS Tesla (NOT JJ!) EL34s. Vacuum Tube Valley rated them higher than EVERYTHING including Amperex, Mullard, etc.

    Mike,

I just ordered a set for the new Concorde...if they are anywhere near as good as the NOS Tesla (NOT JJ) preamp tubes, I'll think I died and went to heaven!!

For little $$$, try the Valve Art (Chinese) EL34. I've been shocked at how good this tube sounds in the amps I've tried it in.

I have been surprised at how good the Chinese EL34 A sounds in my emery sound amp. No, it is not an Amperex or Mullard, but for approx $20 bucks per matched pair they kick especially if you are on a budget. The ones I got recently were actually made for the Jackson guitar and amp company! Anybody remember them?

Best tone I've heard from a Komet 60 were from RCA 6L6GC blackplates followed closely by EL37's in the fast mode. EL34's always sounded too harsh to me in a K60.

At one time, Komet 60's shipped with Sovtek 12AX7LPS and they sounded about as good as anything else I tried, but the tend to go microphonic in a few months. So I switched to RCA 7025's and they seem very stable and sound good.

    Mike at KCA,

I think they made a mistake on the VTV on the year of those Tesla. They said 91 brown bases but brown bases were not made at that time- the black base Tesla's were used starting sometime later in the 80's. They probably meant 1981 brown bases.

The black base are still very good up until around 89. Those last few years were nothing special.

The brown base Teslas are great EL34's. One main reason for the switch to Tesla in the mid 70's from the Mullard EL34 was noise and the Tesla's broke up a little earlier. This was likely due to Mullard switching to the XF3 which had stapled plates which may have caused more rattle when the amps were shipped and some of the stapled plates may have come loose.

I have Mullard XF2 power tubes.

    Mullard rectifier tube.

Pre amp - varies by amp

Position 1 Usually a telefunken smooth plate or ribbed plate depends on the amp

Position 2 Mullard 12ax7 short plate or an amperex bugle boy depends on the amp

Position 3 Mullard 12ax7 short plate or an amperex bugle boy depends on the amp.

    Recap:

    Mullard xf2 power tubes
    Mullard 5ar4 rectifier tube
Telefunken smooth or ribbed plate position 1
amperex bugle position 2 or 3
mullard 12ax7 in 2 or 3 depending on the bugle boy

I once talked to Jim Rolph on the phone about his K60 that was modded by Ken Fisher? He was telling me that Ken put in some type of industrial power tubes. I don't know much about this stuff so I'm going to call him back tomorrow and find out more details. I'll post back later.

Also I'll take it over to my friend Hartley and see what he thinks. He's been in the amp business for a long time and has a very sensible view on things.
