-I am posting from the Beacon Theater in NYC. At a Tragically Hip show with an 8 PM start. It is 850 and for the last 50 minutes there's been a guy on stage with a DJ] Turntable set up playing records. Some songs are good. Many are not. Lamest opening "act" of all time in my view.

Crappy android pic below. The funny thing - to me at least - was that he was hired to play for an hour and instead of showing up with an hour's worth of music on records in order he showed up with a big box of records and seemed to be picking the songs "on the spot." Just silly.

WTF? They couldn't get a BAND for the ****ing Tragically Hip? I mean, I know their following is smaller outside Canada but hell, that sounds like blasphemy!

I'd rather listen to a DJ than a bad comedian called Marty Putz I saw open for Sons of Freedom a long time ago.

Last time The Police toured Australia they had Fergie as the opening act.

I think that fits your criteria of 'lame'.

AFAIK Fergie is an international musical star....a ",little" better than a guy playing records I would say...

Yes that's true and I get the point. But still.............Fergie..........with The Police? Maybe it's just me that thinks that's lame.

When i saw The Eels years ago, they had a mime as the opening act. All i remember is the guy standing there absolutely still for what seemed like 15 minutes, then moving just a little, and the crowd going nuts. Maybe he was some sort of genius, and it was just over my head...

Crappy opening band with these guys Ritchie Sambuca and John-Bon Giovi. They weren't gonna get anywhere in this business!

Well, good news all: The show was indeed excellent. Gordy's voice was much strong than I'd heard it on recent concert videos, and his shirt landed below the waist on his pants, also a good thing.

It's the "Fully and Completely" Tour. First "act" was side 1, followed by a VERY brief respite. Act 2 opened with Courage, a fan favorite. The finished the album and played another 5 or 6 songs. All in all they played for about 90 minutes.

I really like the musicianship of the two guitarists, bassist, and drums. Though nobody jumps out at you with an "OH MY GOD HIS CHOPS ARE AMAAZZZZZING!!!", they're a solid band. I really like Rob Baker's lead playing. Not a speed demon but very tasteful in his solos and non-rhythm accents to the songs.

I'd still much preferred them to start at 8 rather than waste my time w/ the BS DJ. It's now 12:21 and I'm still an hour from home (NJ transit sucks).

When I saw Black Sabbath last year, they also had a DJ playing records rather than an opening band. At least he did play really good songs (Dio, Slayer, Megadeth...), but I would have rather seen another band.

Geez, club managers and events planners get slammed on TGP for hiring DJs and yet bands are hiring them as opening acts. LOL.

The DJ is a member of Broken Social Scene, and has connections to the Hip, although I'd much rather have BSS open (or no opener). The Hip usually have great opening bands, and I'm curious to know why they went with Brendan Canning as the DJ instead of a band. It's probably way cheaper to hire him than a full band...

    - Hinder opening for Motley Crue in 2009.
    - Pop Evil opening for Judas Priest & Whitesnake in 2009.
    - Trivium opening for Dream Theater in 2011.
    - Black Label Society opening for Judas Priest in 2011.

Worst opening band I ever sat through was when I saw Stereolab at the Showbox in Seattle in like '99 or '00. It was 2 guys with laptops doing the worst Electro-Glitch I have ever heard. It was horrible. And I like Glitch when done right. This most certainly was not done right. It was mostly high pitched squeal for 45 minutes. Ugh.
