I don't know much about these particular strats, but have a handle on a nice looking one for $900. It may have aftermarket pickups and some slight nitro issues on the bottom and top of the back of the neck (where your hands sit).

It appears to be a decent deal, as Ebay shows sold like guitars for anywhere from $1300-$1800.

    Thoughts?

Yes. That is an excellent deal IMO. Those are great well made guitars. What color? Ask if they had any mods done first and foremost.

The necks on these are on the slim side. Got any photos?

sunburst. He said they took the neck off when he took it to a luthier (after buying it a few years ago) and it shows August of 88. I've looked up other 88s and the neck plate serial does look in line

    Here are a few:

Seems like a good deal at that price with the mods and wear.

My god. That is a stellar deal in my opinion. Have you checked it out in person? I'd snatch that up.

Those "nitro issues" are just playwear. I have an 83 and 84 62RI with wear in the exact same places. Jump on that, though. Great deal assuming you like the pickups.

True. Very common on the ones I have seen, and it feels good to me when I have played them. You also will see a lot of nitro wear on the upper right forearm area.

Well, the first thing I typically do with a strat is throw in a Fralin SP43 in the bridge. So if I buy it, I'll play it first, but expect to change the bridge to my old standby. :)

So what you're saying is, if I am in the market for a strat, this is a model/year to grab and a good price? The strat is my second guitar and I was thinking of picking up one for around $650-$750, but if this one is worth it (and seems I should be able to resell it if I so choose), I may just pull the trigger.

In other words, would I be an idiot not to take this (or a better) deal on the guitar? :)

not a bad deal, but if it's got playwear and is an 88, how are the frets?

Good point about the frets. If they have some life in them, jump on it. That is a lot of Strat for under a G.

He tells me the frets have no divots or valleys. The authenticity (an actual 88 avri) and frets were/are my main concern.

What pickups are the replacements? 80's avri pups ain't cheap, hence the pricing gap.

That guitar looks extremely clean to me in terms of play wear. IMHO Great deal.

Well, I passed this deal along to another forumite as I decided to follow my gut and layoff after talking/texting with the seller.

I've done a ton of deals here and on CL and sometimes you just have to pass! I hope the other member takes him up and gets a great deal! It does (at least in pics) look very clean.
