You don't go anywhere in BB-land without this one:

-----5-------------8------
--5--------/10s-----------
--------------------------

9fingers, that is in B. If you move everything up two frets, you will be in the "Live At The Regal-Sweet Little Angel" approved key of C#.

This example is in the "B.B. King box" :

E---x---l-----l---x---
B---x---l-----l---x---
G-------l--x--l-------

Here is a popular BB intro in A:

E--------------------------------
B--------------------------------
G----------------------5h6------
D----------4-----7-------------7
A---7----------------------------
E---------------------------------

Very cool BB interview, thanks for turning us on to that clip! BB King had a big influence on me when I first started learning how to play. Studying his playing really taught me how to play melodically and how to say more by playing less...wish more guitarists took that approach.

BB put out like 3 videos on REH (I think) that talked about the blues. Books were even made available too.

Chris

His style isn't all that complicated and would be a GREAT place to start transcribing, he didn't play a million notes but played really nice ones.

The walkdown lick (and all variations thereof) is THE BB King lick to me (C#):

E---------------------14--16---------------------------
B-------14--16b(full)----------16b(half)16--14(vibrato)--
G----15------------------------------------------------
D------------------------------------------------------
A------------------------------------------------------
E------------------------------------------------------

E---------16b(full) 16--14--16----------------------------------
B--/14---------------------------16b(1/4)--14--16-------14(vibrato)
G-----------------------------------------------------15------
D-------------------------------------------------------------------
A-------------------------------------------------------------------
E-------------------------------------------------------------------

Here you go 9fingers. Slide into the first note. BB is constantly doing "micro bends" as well. Almost every note in this phrase can have a little "english" on it.

Thanks again folks. (I was late getting back to this thread as I was tied up this week with jury duty). Just trying these new ones & they are continuing to add to the "BB feel". This stuff is simple but so effective. If you care to add any more I will work them in as well!

Some good advice so far , and playing BB King will help everyone's guitar playing.

I recommend personally transcribing the music yourself although BB King's style is well-documented in books and other instructional materials. Get some software like "Amazing SlowDowner", SlowBlast", etc. to slow down the speed of a cd played in the computer and write out the notes yourself.

If wanting to learn several songs but only willing to personally transcribe a few, also try these instructional aids :

"BB King Blues Master Complete" --- video series with BB and also book/cd.
"BB King Signature Licks" book /cd by Wolf Marshall.
"BB King Style" cd-rom by Riff Interactive
"BB King" cd-rom by iSong (Hal Leonard). (May or may not operate in newer computers)
BB King songs at 911Tabs.com to download into GuitarPro software.

However, to really ~learn~ how to play like BB King you will have to spend time with his actual recordings to learn his ~feel~ for the notes. Transcribing the music yourself goes immediately to this step. The instructional materials are best used as a backing band play along.
