There seems to be several versions of the R8 available here in Japan, and was wondering if the price difference from a regular one, and one with hard rock maple top was worth it or not (the difference is around 70,000 yen or around US $850). Also there are R8's that have a "Hand Selected" designation - does anybody know what this means? and is it worth an additional US $850? I know I should just play them and find the one I like, but this is, afterall TGP, and was just wondering what everyone thought. Thanks.

All R8s should technically have hard rock maple according to Gibsons spec sheet. Now the hand selected top i think is all about aesthetics. but playing em is definitely the best way to find one you'll love

Agree with Pageburst. Usually it's about cosmetics. Some just have a more vintage look than others so they get the HRM designation (and upcharge). I'd base my decision on how it sounds and feels. The looks are icing on the cake.

Not unless you have ears that perform double duty as AWACS.
