Rather talk Sotol.
My one and only mezcal foray was with Charlie, who owned a Mexican import store in downtown Passaic, NJ, in the 60's and 70's. Charlie used his frequent 'trips' south to import other things too. This time he brought back a dozen or so different mezcal offerings, most from small private family operations.
Not being much of a drinker, I found mezcal to be absolutely wonderful, and in every way satisfying, taste, mind and body experience, all. But I don't know if this was like what is found these days in the states.
Compared to Tequila I've had, there's simply no comparison.
I love tequila. I really love mezcal for those times I want to treat myself. Smoky drinks are soooo good!
My favorite mezcal drink is mixed with a little mango nectar, a sprinkle of chile powder and perhaps a touch of soda water to cut the sweetness and give it some fizz. Garnish with a lime. It was inspired by chile mango candies.
You'll need goggles if you get too much of it.
I've yet to come across any in stores but I've been hearing about it.
