I have been shopping for a Les Paul and virtually everyone claims that their Les Paul is light weight, whether it's 9 lbs + or 8 1/2 lbs. So what is an average Les Paul weight (i.e above this weight it would be "heavy", below this weight it would be "light")?

Anything under 9 would be considered light. 8.5 is often cited as "ideal" but as we all know, there is no perfect weight.

The above would apply to the world of true solid body LP's. I supposed 8.5 Lbs would be heavy for one of those cloud LP's.

I think it depends on what era...

Lightweight 50's LP...probably anything under 8.5lbs
Lightweight 70s-80s LP...probably anything under 10 lbs

With the Historics its pretty variable. I've got a 2001 R8 thats 8.5 lbs even, and thats probably a pretty average weight for that particular year. I've seen them as low as just under 8lbs. More recent models are more likely to be over the 9 lb mark.

By comparison, my 2006 Cloud 9 R4 is 7.2 lbs.

Assuming the weights in the Beauty of the Burst book are accurate, the listed weights average out to about 8.8 lbs for the 58-60 Les Paul Standards.

my 2001 R7 Darkback, from a Japanese dealer.

7.9lbs - she's lighter than my 9lb PRS & 8lb tele!

she's solid - 1pc back, non-chambered, non-weight relieved.

and boy does she scream. :D
