I'm a huge fan of Andy Timmons. Real cool eclectic blend of jazz sensibility, EJ,SRV and Satch/Vai. I used to have an AT300 and never really "bonded" with the guitar. I always wanted another one or an AT100. Big $$$(2k+) and hard to find. Here is my solution, build a workingman's AT clone:
    http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr134/athadden/Ibanez-Laguna-AT-2.jpg
    http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr134/athadden/Ibanez-Laguna-AT-1-1.jpg

    -Took a Laguna off Ebay-used...$170...great ash body,great Wilkinson trem,decent pickups,useless tuners and butt-ugly headstock.
-Bought an new Ibanez SA series neck. Direct fit to the Raguna(56mm) Same heel shape. $110
-DiMarzio Crusiers DP187's...gotta have 'em for true AT tone..$124.99
-Wanted an AT100 Dimarzio, not sure if it would work with the ash body.
-Grabbed a VEH from Guitar Fetish...$35..new CTS pots, 5 way switch $12
-Sperzel tuners $60...another underrated component of tone IMHO.
    - Treble-bypass mod for authentic AT $5
Amazing guitar for the $$$. I can't put the damn thing down.

Looks nice. Great looking guitar for under $500! Now we need a video or soundclip so we can hear it in action!

How did you know that neck would fit, or did you just get supremely lucky? How does that VEH sound?

    Awesome!

I actually had the same thought about the Laguna as an AT clone. My only issue with this is the Ibanez neck...the only ones that aren't super thin (wizard style) are the artist (Satriani neck would be perfect).

I think the market is missing a mid level super strat that is classy looking. Ibanez especially...

a lot of research...dimensioned the existing Laguna(56mm) and verified the radius of neck pocket. The heel is exactly the same. Finding the SA neck and confirming those dimensions was the key.
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr134/athadden/Laguna-SAneck.jpg ....Ibanez on left...Laguna on right...same hole pattern footprint(my neck had NO holes though)
http://i477.photobucket.com/albums/rr134/athadden/Laguna-SA-neckfit.jpg ....fits better than many of my $$$ guitars

The VEH sounds pretty good(better than an SD Custom Custom I had in another ash body).

I know it's heresy in some parts...but the Laguna's I've played are great guitars for the $$$. The only systemic shortcoming I've encountered are the tuners(which suck) and the mind-numbing ugliness of the headstock.
I'd check with KNE guitars for a custom neck if the Ibby is not your cup o tea. The only thing about the Satch neck is the Floyd-type nut. I wanted to use a Wilkinson trem similar to Timmons.
You are 100% correct about the dearth of mid-level super Strats. It seems like you have go Suhr etc or deal with a Floyd-inspired permutation.
If Ibanez made a RG body(please no monkey handle) with Fendery-type colors and woods. Put a non-Lo-Pro/Floyd nut...under $600...They would sell a ton IMHO. No offense to the RG/JEM guys(they are very nice)...I want the Fender-vibe w/Ibanez playability

I bought my SA off this guy...

Thanks for the kind words! I'm working on a YouTube vid for this beauty. I've been playing 30+ years...this guitar is one of the most resonant, cool sounding guitars I've ever owned. Compares to my EJ for sustain.

    Now you've got me thinking....

the necks on these are pretty nice, what about doing some woodwork to the headstock? Shape it, and sand it down, replace tuners and pickups.

The p/u's in the Laguna are not horrible. I was shooting for a very specific AT tone only the DP187's can handle.

    Congrats man- nice job.

Cruisers are some very cool pickups- wonder how they'd sound with a series/parallel switch probably very quacky with the 2 coils in parallel.........

Very nice work. I've actually thought about doing the same thing to a Laguna, so this re-sparks that interest, definitely.

Where did you get the new Ibanez neck? Ebay, from a dealer, or elsewhere?

What makes his signature model so expensive compared to other Ibanez stuff?

    I wish I knew....the AT300 has a mahogany body...the AT100 is alder
The complement of Dimarzios will run you $200. The AT bucker and the two DP 187 Cruisers(which sound awesome).
    Wilkinson Trem? $150 ish?
    Sperzels? $65 ish?

There are a lot of choice components in the AT's. However, 2K?...
I had an AT300 and the setup was atrocious. I figured for $1900 it would play pretty well out of the box. Nice guitar... but huge $$$

I have a similar approach to yours. Love AT, so I bought an Ibanez 421R, replaced the pickups with a Cruiser, Chopper, and a PAF Pro. It's become one of my favorite guitars. It's got an antique type of finish and the maple board has been totally worn and dirty from all the years of use (been playing it since 1999).

    I'll post a pic when I get home :)
