It's been a while since I listened to the studio version of Hendrix playing Little Wing and, man, it came across to me as an early demo. Bear with me on this...

The glockenspiel throughout seems over the top, maybe it's just too loud in the mix. His playing seems casual - (like the opening riff.) The univibe sounds great when he kicks it in at :24 but to me it's jarring and muddying starting at 1:40. Anyway, the whole thing comes across as a demo. Early and unfinished.

Now, I love Hendrix, he's unique and a superb player, writer, etc. So this is in no way is a criticism of him, just my perception of this studio song.

Anyone see this with a fresh listen? It's just so unpolished compared to his other work. Maybe it's intentional, his producer etc. kept telling him to tone it down when he started playing it. Could have thought, "I'll tone it down". Anyway...

The other thought is, maybe I'm just comparing it to SRV's and Sting's versions. Both did so much with it - SRV with the extended solos, Sting with that totally different intro and blistering sustained solo.

    Thoughts?

Can't find a Hendrix video, but for comparison...

There’s actually a version with a lot more guitar playing on it, out there.

The one that always sounded unfinished to me, was Angel. I never liked how they just sped up the tape at the end of it.

In my opinion, no. It's "Little" Wing after all, not Big-Ginormous-Extended Wing :)
I think SRV's version goes on too long. One of the cool things about Hendrix's version is it leaves you wanting more. That's a hallmark of a great song.

Agreed. Jimi’s version of “Little Wing” is a great song.

SRV’s version is a guitar solo over the chord changes of a great song, with too much cheesy reverb on the drums.

Was SRV’s version really intended for release? It always struck me as just a studio jam. IMO it sounds more like a tribute to Hendrix rather than him trying to do something with it himself.

I always wanted the Jimi version to go on a bit longer, and always thought the SRV version was too damn long. In the end, I prefer Jimi's to any other version. Nothing beats the original. Sting, to his credit, tried to make it his own, but I don't care for his version.

I’ll have to agree w/ this:

Little wing is perfect. We have exponentially more equipment than Hendrix did, yet I hear no one creating what he did...

It was always too short to me. Love it but I wish he would have doubled it and wailed over the changes.

Anybody know of him doing that live?

The fade always struck me as pretty rapid in Jimi's version, as if it went on longer but there was something he or Eddie didn't care for in the fade. I love it as is, simply because that's how I heard the song first. Would have loved to hear Jimi unwind on it a minute or so on the fade, myself.

I think it's perfect as it is.

Although my favorite version of the song is the live version from the "Jimi Hendrix Concerts" album.

It was released on Axis, so someone in Jimi's circle (probably Jimi himself) thought it was done - warts and all.
