Just now getting into home recording and I just picked up Logic X to start recording with. Had a friend come over last night who uses Logic quite a bit to record, so he could show me the ropes. While going through the sample sounds for midi he noticed that many of the sample sounds from Logic 9 (which is what he still uses) were gone. I'm wondering if there's something I need to do like download more midi instruments from somewhere to get them to show up. For example, when I would go to the string sounds, there was only one full orchestral string sound. My friend thought it was weird since he said he has tons of other options to choose from, like hundreds of different instruments within the instrument menu, and there were only a few options for each instrument selection. Hope this makes some degree of sense. Just wondering if this had been anyone elses experience, when upgrading from 9 to X.

To start with use the Download Additional Content.. menu option in the Logic Pro X menu to download all the possible content as everything is not installed by default from an App store purchase.

yup. then it should all be there.

Warning, this is a pain in the neck to do and will crap out on you multiple times, meaning you have to do it over and over.

Apple's "download only" plan for this software was freakin' stupid.

Be warned. Logic 9 is several DUAL LAYER DVDs of additional content (which is why I preferred the boxed versions). I think its like 60gb total. Its gonna take awhile to grab all of it..

Yeah, when you go to the Download Additional Content section it shows you a list of everything available to download including a Legacy Folder that has all the sounds of Logic 9 in it. The total amount of content is somewhere between 30-40Gb I think. My Mac Mini is on a wireless connection so it took me almost a week on and off to get everything downloaded. I would just do it in 2-3 hour chunks each night when I got home and let it run while I watched TV or played guitar or whatever. Because most new Macs don't come with a CD/DVD drive I think this is why they've gone to the download only route. I've noticed that OS X Mavericks behaves in many ways like iOS for iPad/iPhone, etc. in that respect (App Store for instance). I agree that it's kind of annoying but that's the model they're going for so there you go.

Downloaded fine for me the first try and I'm running an 06 Pro with Lion (shhhh) so you shouldnt have too many issues getting the content. Took maybe two hours on my home wireless.
