I've got this little roadhouse rock cover band that's been doing a once a month gig @ a dive bar in a little town about 70 miles east of Nashville. The set lists are pretty lame, but the money's good and I like the other guys in the band. Plus they give me the leeway to play these "old nuggets" pretty much any way I want. It just so happens, this bar is one of Lonnie Mack's fave weekend hangouts. He likes to hang out there, have a few beers and visit with his buddies. Turns out we have some mutual friends so they introduce me to him. Most nights I usually swing by the bar and chat with him for about 5 minutes during a set break. Nothing big, just shooting the **** while waiting on a drink. He'll say we're doin' a fine job, and I'll invite him up to play. He always declines, and I go back to the stage and finish. (BTW, there's no pressure @ all playing the lead to "Roadhouse Blues" in front of the guy who did it first.) Well, Saturday he finally said "Yes". I was floored. Couldn't believe it. He starts describing what his "requirements" are to play. He needs something "with some sustain"."Will it crunch? I need a little crunch." "Something on the verge of feeding back." and BTW, did I have "something he could step on, to goose it a little" if it wasn't crunchy and sustaining. I said, "dude, I have a Klon. I think you'll be fine." His response was, "I don't know what the hell that is." To me, that was priceless. At this point, I'm a little worried. The only rig we have that fits his description is mine. The other two guitar cats play MIM Strats into a solid state Fender and a 5150. (One sounds like a can of angry bees playing thru a flanger, and I can't tell you what the other one sounds like because I've never heard him on stage. ) At this point I realize that if he plays, I won't get to jam with him cause he'll be using my rig. We finish talking, and he say's he'll come up later. So he does, and I give him my new PRS SC 245 that I got from a trade here last week. I show him the volume knobs @ his request, tell him to step on the "silver box" if he needs more and then I get the hell out of the way. He dimes my Bad Cat Cub, makes a couple of adjustments and then (here comes the good part) proceeds to begin OFFICIALLY TEARING THE ROOF OFF THE PLACE. It was pretty cool actually. He played "Cincinatti Jail" and peeled the paint off the walls with my rig. His (my?) guitar was smoking. Sounded like the breathing of a very large, wild anilmal. His band leading skills were also awesome. Lots of pointing @ people to change dynamics and cue solos. He owned the stage and had everybody doing exactly what he wanted them to do. Crowd went nuts, people were taking pics with their camera phones. People were screaming, everybody started dancing, it was great. He cut my other lead player's head clean off when they were swapping licks. I thought that was pretty funny, as he's a big EVH style flash player. Bottom line- His playing is still awesome. Tone is very much in the fingers. He made my rig absolutely come alive in ways I've never heard. I'm a VHS player and he's a freakin' blu-ray. Just wanted to share this with folks who may be interested. Sorry that it "tells" much better than it "reads". It was a cool moment, to be sure.
