I`ve had a lot of family crisis going on the last 6 weeks or so, so I haven`t been playing much. I decided tonight to take my R8 out of the closet and play a little and it looked like THIS. All I can figure is that it was next to an AC vent and it is pretty icy in here a lot but there were some very hot days when no one was home so we opened the windows and the sun beats on this area for about 4 solid hours. I guess it went to both extremes so many times it started aging itself.

Yep...I would turn lemons into lemonade at this point, and send that bad boy over to RS Guitarworks, so that they can finish aging it for you!

damn bro...that a LOT of checking...and its real small too..

does it dissapear when its at the right angle or is it visible pretty much all the time?

your pretty good w/ a spray gun, aint ya?

+1 on it kinda looking cool...although if i took my R8 outta the case and saw that i might gasp too...at least now you can play it with reckless abandon.

Weird. You see a LOT on the top. Considerably less on the back and the lines are a lot bigger. None to speak of on the sides or nek. a little on the back of the headstock. seems to only be on the flat surfaces.

Some is visible all the time but a lot fades in and out in the light. That is why all the photos are at an angle. As far as a spray gun, I`ve sprayed a few guitars in my time. As far as playing with reckless abandon, I always ahve and always will. It`s just wood. It`s MEANT to be played.

I'd guess the lacquer mix was off. A lacquer finish is supposed to expand and contract (at least a little!). Do you like the look?

This is one of about 50 Gibson "experimented" with. They used only 6 coats of straight (no plasticiser) laquer. As opposed to 16 coats on Historics and 28 on Standards, etc. Yeah, I like older looking instruments. I didn`t even notice it until the light caught it. Looking straight at it it`s almost invisible.

I have heard anecdotal stories of that happening and the tone is much improved with the checked finish. Can you hear any difference?

    Shawn.
