Hi everyone. I'm looking for a good guitar tech preferably in the North Austin, Round Rock area. Any suggestions? It seems most of the techs are way south of me.

You need @chrisforshage, but he’s not a tech - he builds guitars from scratch. I own one of his guitars (in my avatar) and he’s done lots of repairs and mods for me. Highly recomended.

Very nice guy, super talented, and based in Pflugerville.

I do some video production work with Chris, so I’m a little biased, but everything is better after he gets ahold of it. All his contact info is at the end of this video.

Don't know the Austin area as it's changed a lot since I used to go there back when the airport was a lot closer to downtown. Ed Reynolds is/was a member here. He's nationally known and respected and would be on my short list if I was in the area.

Has anybody heard of Dr Jon's Guitar Repair and Restoration in Round Rock? I'm just wondering if anybody has used him.

Not sure if he can still do this, but I drive down from the north part of Georgetown. He is on Manchaca, almost down to Dittmar. So, an hour each way. I would drop off my guitar in the morning, go hit the guitar shops, eat some lunch, go back dinner time and pick it up. That is for a Full fret job. ok, so fast (not sure he can still do this, he seemed busier last time I was down). Now, the fret jobs. Wow. Just great stuff. I ended up taking him all my guitars eventually, including the vintage stuff. EVERY one of them came out playing better than they had ever played. The best work I have ever had done by a good bit.

There are some well known guys in town. One I called, he said get on the list and he would call back when it was time to bring the guitar in. So, that was cool, you didn't leave it in his shop 6 months til he got to it. While I was waiting, I found Peter. By the time the other guy called me back, Peter had done at least 2 of mine. I can't see the other guy being all that much better, but I'll never know.

Also, Peter has a long history, until recently he made necks at Collings. They have a pretty good rep.

+3 on Peter Skermetta. Could be the best fretwork in the business, I drive an hour to bring him my stuff.

I have used Dr. Jon a couple of times for setups and neck work. He is very friendly and invites you into his home. He has done a fantastic job every time, and he is right down the street from a Torchy's so lunch is a no brainer.

Collings, he was the Master Builder at Tyler, head of the custom shop for Fernandez, where he worked on guitars for EVH, Vai, The Edge, pretty much anyone with a sustainer pickup.

    And a super nice guy!

this may not be a lot of help, but I bought a used Hamer from Austin Musical Exchange on the north side of the city (6015 Burnet Rd) and it was beautifully set up, as was every other guitar on the wall. They're a mom & pop shop that seems to primarily rely on setups & repair as their main focus. If the playability of their stuff for sale is any indication, I'd say their setups & repairs should be top notch. They seemed like great folks to deal with too.
