You should check out Yamaha, Hagström, Ibanez and Washburn. Too costy, then look for used ones.

I've heard people say good things about the Ibanez Art-core series.

The Epiphone Alleykat & Wildkat are worth a look.

I had an Epiphone s/h years ago that I'll regret selling for the rest of my life. Check 'em out.

The best guitars in that price range are the Ibanez Artcore's. I work on a lot of them & I cant remember a bad one. Theres a lot of Artcore models to choose from.

+1 on the Epiphone AlleyKat. With a good setup, they sound good and play quite well. And if you outgrow it, just pop in some different pickups and fool with some new pots, and get an entirely different tone. I like mine a lot, but wanted to sell to buy some PA gear. All the typical Craigslist lowballers came out to offer me peanuts ... I kept it, and glad I did. I got it used (in mint condition, as unplayed) and payed under $300 for it (Street price, new, is $499). Picked up the hard case for another $65.
