Anyone have some great examples of bands/tracks I could listen to? I think this is the direction I'm looking to move towards but I need ideas and inspiration to take the older straight ahead guitar based rock format I grew up with forward with some EDM elements (samping, synths) that still retain high quality SONGS with HOOKS and to make it popular.
I've heard some really cool local stuff, but the songs and song structure are weak. The song sound cool and is bolstered by neat breaks, high quality samples/synths with hard guitars but IMHO that is sometimes smoke and mirrors hiding a weak or non existing song structure/melody/hook.

I guess Paramore is an example of the direction I can see heading, but maybe more electronic/sequenced/atmospheric content?

Garbage would be the correct answer.

Criminally underrated band.

Great songs, tons of hooks and balls-out production.

And Shirley. <g>

Rock + Pop + Electronic elements + Good songs = Mutemath!

Check these songs out:

And a more mellow one with cool ambient sounds:

Their first album is still my favorite one, their second is also very cool.

Check out LCD Soundsystem (especially their eponymous debut). This is pretty much exactly what you are looking for.

Sleigh Bells.

Not so much in the way of EDM elements, but they brilliantly fuse heavy guitar rock with pop vocals and killer hooks.

OP, here are two European bands of interest you might not have heard of:

Amaranthe is an Power Metal / Dance Pop / Industrial band with a really interesting sound. Strong melodic hooks, great studio production, heavy guitars and 3 lead singers with completely different styles. They're one of my favorite bands to come out in the past 10 years.

Ladytron is an Electronic Pop / Electroclash band that has a pretty unique sound. Strong hooks, analog synths, and interesting lyrics:

Garbage would be the correct answer.
Don't you mean Curve, the UK band who's sound they pretty much copied? :D

Curve, MGMT, Ladytron, etc...

There is a lot of stuff out there.

Flaming Lips, Ken Andrews project (Failure) called On, Massive Attack's Mezzanine, Portishead, Tame Impala, Goldfrapp, Late of the Pier... Just off the top of my head...

Kelli Ali with the Dysfunctional Psychedelic Walton's, payback time. her stuff right after sneaker pimps was incredible. then she turned all folksy acoustic emotional mellow. but for a few years it was great. not to mention the sneaker pimps were/are a pretty damn amazing band.. make that really amazing, but I like them best with Kelli on vocals.
