Anyone have a suggestion for a loose, gritty, dirty overdrive? Something along the lines of Neil Young’s sound in Cinnamon girl. Or maybe a fuzz?

Fuzz face circuit - fuzz turned up- guitar volume down to control how much grit vs fuzz.

    Fulltone 69 fuzz

Caroline Haymaker gives you a lot of control over how smooth vs angry it can get.

Any of the 5e3 or Supro type pedals can get close to that sound.

HAO Sole Pressure or Mojo Hand Mule will get you there.

Smallsound/Bigsound Mini can do some of those blown out tweed tones but with clarity if you crank up the bass (pre-gain) knob and adjust the bias to taste (usually lower than 12 o’clock).

Neil Young got his Cinnamon Girl distortion just from a pushed amp
"At the core of Young’s amplifier setup is a piece of gear as essential to his sound as Old Black: the 1959 tweed Fender Deluxe he’s used since the late Sixties. A small, 15-watt unit, with just two volume knobs and a shared tone control, this amp, says Cragg, “makes all the sound. Onstage, as loud as everything gets, that’s what you hear. And it’s totally stock except for two 6L6’s in place of the original tubes. That boosts the output from 15 to 19 watts, and it kills.” An added consequence of this rebiasing is that the amp runs extremely hot; Cragg has high-powered fans trained on the back of the Deluxe to “keep it from blowing up.”

Young derives his distortion entirely from the Deluxe’s output-tube saturation. "

Metamucil before bed. You will wake up to loose gritty overdrive.

Nobody has mentioned the Lovepedal Les Lius yet. For shame.

The Wampler Tweed 57 gives that loose feel. Any of the tweed voice options mentioned above should do the trick.

Catalinbread Formula 55 will nail that sound. I run mine at home in lieu of my 5e3 clone which is at my practice space. I recommend using a higher voltage which really makes a huge difference. It's rated up to 18v.

Neil plays a tweed on the verge of meltdown. That new Falcon pedal nails it to a T. Crazy Tube Circuits Falcon.

I think lower gain settings on the DOD Carcosa can get you there, or pretty close.

I’ve also been swapping in a BC549 dirty boost from SolidGoldFX. Highly recommend checking this little guy out. Super dynamic and cleans up extraordinarily, and is a steal.
