From my understanding, in the world of common preamp tubes, the order, from high gain to low gain, looks something like this:

    12AX7
    12AT7
    12AY7
    12AU7

Am I right? Did I miss anything? What's the lowest gain preamp tube out there? Discuss.

My absolute favorite lower gain type preamp tube is a 5751(especially the RCA Command Series) where does that fit into the above scheme.

Like mike said thats about it. Couple inbetween and similar numbered 'equvilents' either industrial or computer(believe it or not!)

    12AX7,ECC83(6681)
    5751
    12AT7,ECC81(6201)
    12AY7 (6072)
    12AV7(5965)
    12AU7,ECC82(6189,5963)

The 12AU7 is the lowest direct swap I know of. Recently dropped one in the V2(clean channel) of my Supersonic with good results. Bob

When I had amps with reverb I always put a Mullard 12AU7 in the reverb driver.
I really like the way they mellow the verb.

The 12BH7A, with amplification factor of 16.5, is sometimes used as a lower gain sub for 12AU7 (12AU7 mu rating is 19.5). It has a taller glass envelope (about 1/2 inch taller) than the 12AU7, but same diameter and pin count. Check with your amp manufacturer if it will work as a trouble-free sub for your application.
