I'm considering this guitar...does the dark finish at the neck joint look normal? I don't recall seeing this before.

Ive never seen anyting like that before, It is ussually 1 solid color like the rest of hte back and neck. It looks as if someone had some repair done and tried to cover it up, thats just a guess though. Does it seem to have any repairs done?

Thanks, I have yet to handle it...but it's local so I may check it out.

    Wow,

I've never seen that. Maybe it is normal.

You sure that's not just a shadow in the picture? Looks really odd.

The black finish at the neck joint is normal with certain colours such as tobacoo sunburst or vintage sunburst. I have seen it at Standards and Specials and my 95 Les Paul Standard Premium Plus in vintage sunburst has it as well.

Doesn't look like a shadow to me...looks fully lit, and there is a glare across both the lighter & darker parts. May check it out in person, but I'm hesitant.

However, when they're on other guitars it's usually not just at one end of the neck- my uneducated guess is a repair.
