I think they're completely insincere, total BS. Only someone who is filthy rich would imagine having no possessions. You know what people with no possessions imagine? Having possessions! Having food and a place to eat.

I mean, it's all about peace and love, but, meanwhile, he hit his wife and a waitress and ditched his his wife/kid...don't get me started on this maudlin BS.

All of that, even if true, has nothing to do with the premise of this thread...

I live in that part of the world. I said I actually liked that he used Reseda, only mentioned it in context of the thread topic, to me it’s a fun thing. And I find it interesting because it’s all my neighborhood. I’ve read him talking about who he was writing about, and more important than the name he chose, it was much more about the people who live south of the 101 and Ventura Boulevard up into the hills, in Tarzana and Encino. Reseda is more of a working class area.

The 101 is a little closer to Reseda than the 405 by the way, and Reseda Blvd is the name of an exit from it.

More local info, for anyone who may or may not be interested. Tarzana is in fact named after Tarzan of the Apes. Encino is a type of oak tree native to the area, and Reseda is a type of flower that’s not native to the area.

You're right. The words of "Imagine" make sense, so that's not an issue; and since there are no truth claims made in the song, its truthfulness or untruthfulness is likewise not an issue.

Extract the snippets that conjure up meaning or imagery for you.
Really, looking for literature in songs that do not withstand the scrutiny is futile.
Take 'sounds good' as is and leave it be.
They do not have to be autobiographical, philosophically profound, documentation of actual events.

The song is actually about the man's favorite vinyl record....
    A blues record...

You sir, are taking the lyrics out of context and creating some sort of double entendre that is simply not there.
    Shame on you sir.

About 3 or 4 times a week our CTO and I burst out in song in the lab, "Dawn of light, everlasting creativity of wonder..." That's an inaccurate paraphrase of Tales From Topographic Oceans, but it sure sounds Yessy. What fun.

    From Toto's Africa
"As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti"

I like the way those words sound. But this is not how similes work.

The large stream flowed like a small river.

She slouched in her chair like someone else slouching in a chair.

The hawk eyed the mouse like an owl.

    They're both freakin mountains.

I filled in with one of those big variety/ wedding bands that have about 600 charts last Friday and SWA came up in C and I had about 10 seconds to decide how to play it. Big Fun!

Right...just like "I'm gonna raise your hood...I'm gonna check your oil" is about a small family garage trying to make it in a world of chain oil change stores...

It's "cut loose like a deuce", which should be self-explanatory.

    ..or...
    "Blinded by the light
    Revved up like a deuce
    Another runner in the night"
"Deuce" refers to '32 Ford...as in "Little Deuce Coup"

I don't think that is the deuce being referred to in the original lyric.
