Lyrics that "sound good" but are untrue or don't make sense...

Ambiguity is great. Steely Dan has some of my favorite lyrics precisely because they are at times very murky, and that allows me as the listener to insert my own meanings.

Hendrix too, some of his songs ("One Rainy Wish") have meaning to me but I'm absolutely uncertain if my take was his intent. It doesn't matter. Some songs I don't listen to the lyrics at all. Some songs have basic but still cool lyrics ("Back in Black"). Other songs, I've got no idea what they meant, but if I can inject my own meaning, it's all good.

Yet he wrote the lyrics on porpoise.

In the time of chimpanzees I was a monkey

Makes perfect sense. The kids are going to get together and dance and party to Benny and the Jets, obviously a big sensation, and eat some beef.

I love that tune. The piano solo is epic.

"Bad Guy" by Billie Eilish...#1 last week...
"White shirt now red, my bloody nose
Sleeping, you're on your tippy toes
Creeping around like no one knows
    Think you're so criminal
Bruises, on both my knees for you
Don't say thank you or please
I do what I want when I'm wanting to
    My soul? So cynical
    So you're a tough guy
    Like it really rough guy
    Just can't get enough guy
    Chest always so puffed guy
    I'm that bad type
    Make your mama sad type
    Make your girlfriend mad tight
    Might seduce your dad type
    I'm the bad guy, duh
    I'm the bad guy
I like it when you take control
Even if you know that you don't
Own me, I'll let you play the role
    I'll be your animal
My mommy likes to sing along with me
But she won't sing this song
If she reads all the lyrics
She'll pity the men I know
    So you're a tough guy
    Like it…"

Bad Guy makes perfect sense, it just switches back and forth from first to second person/switches narrators, from the girl to the guy.

I agree...I was posting that as an example of good current pop lyrics. For the most part I think current pop lyrics are thoughtful and relevant...moreso that in many previous years...

I don't know. I play guitar and could never sing or write lyrics. Maybe that's why I'm drawn to it.

Also, as Chris Jericho and Duff McKagan demonstrate, it is profoundly unlikely that, at the time the song was recorded and released, Jon Bon Jovi had even "seen a million faces," let alone that he'd "rocked them all."

Louie Louie, oh no, you take me where ya gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby
Louie Louie, oh baby, take me where ya gotta go
A fine little girl, she waits for me
Me catch the ship across the sea
Me sailed the ship all alone
Me never think I'll make it home
Louie Louie, oh no no no, me gotta go, oh no
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
Three nights and days I sailed the sea
    Me think of girl constantly
On the ship, I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hair
Louie Louie, oh no, me gotta go, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, baby
Louie Louie, oh baby, me gotta go
Okay, let's give it to 'em right now
    Me see
    Me see…

I love Soul Coughing and Mike Doughty’s lyrics were typically word play, almost like a parody of beatnik poetry, but it’s just too cool sounding to hate, I love it!

That depends. He may have worked in a mall before the band broke big and seen a good fraction of a million faces. When you add that to the faces he saw in the arenas and sheds ... who knows?

I'm not sure if he rocked them in the mall, though, unless he worked at Spencer's. I'm told that was really good rockin' territory. And you can put your weed in here.

Lyrics with nonsensical content are the rule, not exceptional.
