Anyone here tried the Magnatone Varsity? I've been told by a very well respected dealer, that it's a really amazing amp, and that it's the best 2xEL84 style amp he's come across. Hard to ignore that kind of recommendation, so I'd love to hear some more impressions/reviews. I'm particularly interested in how it performs with S-style guitars. Any info would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance for your responses.

Is there a new Mag Varsity or the original?Try the Yahoo Magnatone -Valco Users Group. I don't recall if that is a series heater/widowmaker design.

I haven't really looked at anything but the Twilighters and the Super V.

Great little amp. For an EL84 based amp, the high end is very smooth and the mids are nice and thick. It makes single coils sound warm and fat. The downside for me was the overall volume. This amp is incredibly loud and was way more than I needed.

I think it's the best 15 watt el84 amp available today.
Cuts like a knife in a band mix and has no problem keeping up with Bam Bam.

The new model is the same amp with reverb added.
Not sure if the non-reverb model is still available.

Pretty much every demo is with a Tele. I'm particularly interested in how the amp performs with Strats? A lot of the old Valco, Supro, and Magnatone amps, seem to be more commonly used with Teles and Humbucker equipped guitars. Anyone tried it with a Strat?

Considering its fairly strong mids, I would expect it sound great with a Strat......no first hand experience with one through that amp though.

Awesome amp. I think the Varsity nails that classic AC15 tone but makes it more 3 dimensional. Maybe it's more brilliance that seems to bring it out but it sounds amazing. I'd really like to add one to my own collection.

I have heard this amp played by someone with some great chops, not me, and it sounded amazing. Loud! Great clean and great mean. And loud!

I just picked up the non-reverb model after a long search for a 2xEL84 and absolutely love it. I've never tried a Strat but it's incredible with both my Tele and LP. 3 dimensional is an understatement, this amp is FAT and LOUD in the best way possible. Very responsive to the volume knob as well.

Non-reverb has a touch more gain. Non-reverb is stil available I believe.

I am lucky to live just ten miles from Rainbow Guitars. They truly have most everything, even stuff not listed on their website.

They made some interesting changes to the Varsity lineup recently.

Non-reverb is available in the cathedral front box. They discontinued the TV front.
The reverb model is only available in the Twilighter box now.

I wonder if you can still order the head version. I thought the head was really cool.

Hi I just got a varsity reverb and was wondering if anyone knew why the owners manual says to always unplug the footndwitch when not using? I took the cover off and there is no battery so im not sure why that would be necessary
