Would have been the thread title 11 years ago...or 20 years ago...or 25 years ago.

Seriously, fans whined for so many years to bring Dave back and now that he's back they whine to have Sammy back.

    :horse

    Dang, though, Ed sounds great.

Dave can't sing anymore. shame, but true.
    Sammy can.

For me,...I never screamed for Dave back...Hagar was an upgrade.

    Agreed.

Saw'em twice with Dave, twice with Sammy. I prefer the latter over the former. Dave is highly charismatic, but growing old is not for the faint of heart.

Funny, Sammy is 7 years older than Dave. But you wouldn't know it to hear him. He's still got a lot in the tank, where as Dave sounds like his performance years are closing (at least vocally).

    Peace,

So true. I was floored when they got Roth in the band to hear a few people here and there already talking about how they like Sammy better. I don't think I hear that *once* the whole time he was in the band.

+1 However, I believe there is zero chance that Sammy or Michael Anthony for that matter will ever be members of VH again. So it's probably DLR up front until they can't get along anymore.

Which, based on their last tour attempt, should be any day now...

I was born in 1983 so I grew up with Sammy fronting the band and that is the Van Halen that I know and love. I dig the older DLR stuff too but I would never bother to see them live unless Sammy and Mike were with them.

I can't help but chuckle when people blame Sammy for the direction the band went when he joined. It wasn't Sammy bringing in all the keyboard ballads!

Honestly, had Roth stayed in the band, I'd be surprised if they would have had the same longevity. I think the change in musical direction is what kept them going strong for as long as they did.

Funny, I heard that a lot. Here and elsewhere. I like both eras of the band and view them as different beasts.

Dave sounded good on Ellen. Eddie looked entertained by Dave's antics.

I like them both, as well. I thought the harder edged rock songs really suffered with Sammy. But I thought he sounded great on the AOR/Keyboard stuff... which I'm not ashamed to admit liking. The opposite case was true with DLR.

I may have preferred a lot of the music DLR got to sing, but I'll take Sammy's voice any day.

Ellen wasn't bad at all. One thing, Dave sure looks like he is having fun. That's what I admire the most.
Reminds me of a vaudeville performer, larger than life smile, always acknowledging the crowd and performers.

Absolutely. That's what I mean when I said he has quite a bit of charisma. However, if you can't sing your own tunes, all that is left is the cheese, unfortunately.

I loved Dave's first two solo albums after he left VH. At the time, I thought Roth, Via and Sheehan could have been even bigger. Lots of amazing musicianship on those two recordings. They were great live, also.

Just watched the "Ellen" performance and thought it was great.

It's been a long time since the late 70's, and the way I see it, if you can still put butts in seats and smiles on faces- keep on. DLR was never the greatest singer in the world, but those four guys turned rock up-side down when they arrived.

Seen both versions of VH - for me they are two different bands that shared one great guitarist

I remember when they were Mammoth and one city over

I like each band for different reasons

However, from the beginning its always been about EVH regardless of who's singing or playing what and I don't see it ever changing
