I just tried the DSL 15c and DSL40c at a local music store and thought they sounded great. Question I have is there much differences between these 2 amps?

I just play at my home and even thought the 40c is bigger and more wattage it seemed to be nice sounding at lower volumes. Question I have is the 40c overkill for home or would the 15c be a better fit?

Depends on if you need an effects loop. The 40 has one the 15 doesn't.

For home use I'd say the 15c. You should be able to get anything you want with the amp and pedals.

40C has EL34 tubes so that might get ya more marshall roar, I use the 40 at home for low playing and it works great. Then I will blast it at my girls place:) you will have more clean head room with the 40 though also.

The 40 has a crunch switch on the green channel that I found useful.

The 40 has more flexibility in the two modes per channel. The 15 is just clean and Lead 2. Crunch and Lead 1 sound great on the 40.
That and the 40 sounds more typical "Marshall" gives it more juice, in my book. The overall volume difference between the 15 and 40 is small, but the extra clean headroom and effects loop give the 40 considerable advantage in the long run.

A good dealer to let you take both home to sample in real world usage.

Now you can check them out at home in the room and decide what works for you. What an awesome chance. You will make the right call .

OK- after a night of playing both amps (DSL15c and DSL40c) in the clean and gain settings, I decided that the DSL40c has the edge. The facts why I am choosing the 40c over the 15c is:

1.) Volume wise not much different
2.) The 40c sounds better at lower volumes
3.) The 40c has an effects loop and dedicated reverb on both channels
4.) The gain channel on the 40c has OD1 and OD2 which are nicer than the 15c
5.) The 40c has better bottom end
6.) The 40c has better Marshall crunch (probably due to the EL34's)

Even though I am getting the 40c, the 15c was also a good amp in its own right.

One more thing, the 40 can be run at 20w.

I went with the 40 over the 15 mostly because of the FX loop. Plus, for the difference in money, I though the other features made it a better value.

The 40 sounds really really good at bedroom volumes.
