I have a JCM-900 head amp it loaded 4 EL34 tubes with 1960-A cab,the other one also is JCM-900 but it is Combo it loaded 4 6L6gc tubes with 1X12 speaker, the combo it has a nice and sweet sound because it has high pitch and low, but the head amp it loaded EL34 the sound came out is very terrible it only has sharp with high pitch tone only I don't understand why they are same model but loaded with the different tubes.I wonder if I load the 6L6gc in to the JCM-900 head amp what will it happen ? Thank you

That amp was geared toward a "throttled" type of sound. The marketing for it even pronounced how the B channel gain goes to "20"!! The silliness of the 80's and the cult following for spinal tap must have rubbed off.

Anyway, folks have swapped those tubes from 6l6 which I believe they were originally made with, for EL34 because they wanted more of that distorted throttled sound. I did this with my 4100 head. I still have it and what I've noticed is that the main channel sounds great, but the lead is thinner sounding.

I'm watching this thread though, because I have a set of 6L6 that I'd like to swap in and I've just avoided it because I'm a rookie at any of this stuff (amp mods).

These are fairly inconsistent amps from one to another. I owned a jcm 900 for almost 10 years. It was loaded with EL-34's and sounded just fine. It wasn't great, but good. I eventually sold it and went to more classic single channel amps.

My 50 watt 2-12 came with EL-34's. Interesting.

Now thats weird. I read somewhere that the 212's had EL34's which most seem to have.
