Hi guys! Recently I have upgraded from my little ol' AC30 to a full-blown Matchless DC30. This amp is FREAKIN' COOL. One thing though - it doesn't respond the same at all to Overdrives, compared to my AC30, which I pretty much just bombed the signal on, as much as possible. With my Hotcake on full time, my Cusack Screamer was able to jump right on in, and when I wanted to "go for it", I fed my Katana into the Screamer, and it worked a treat.

Nothing like a Matchless to bring out the worst in a pedal. It wasn't noticeable through the Vox, but that Screamer actually compresses a LOT when I kick it in. Its like, I'm playing this lovely Matchless tone with the Hotcake giving me a little dirt, I go to kick it up for a Chorus, and the sound just clamps itself into a little box and stays there. What the heck? This never used to happen...

So I'm gonna start my O/D quest afresh. I'll keep the Cusack, because it works really well with my Vox and Fender. But I need a new one. I wan't a transparent O/D, perhaps even with slightly Vox-y overtones, that doesn't compress like crazy, and keeps the sound "big" and "open". I'm pretty much aiming for the Edge... he has my favourite Vox sound (see the Boston live DVD... thats the best one...)

And I'm guessing your going to say: Timmy, Eternity, and Klon. Right?

The Sampson pedals (Matchless Dirt Box, Bad Cat 2-Tone) deserve honorable mentions, too.

i've used the Bad Cat Black Cat 30r, which is similar to the DC-30 and I had a SC-30 for a while. These are the best overdrives I've tried with it:

    FoxRox ZIM (w/ original cards)
    Lovepedal Eternity
    Fulldrive 2

I always wanted to try a BJFE with it, but never got around to it.

I use a timmy and a moded TS-9 into an anologman chorus and a memory lane. These work great into my matchless BUT they have to be set diffrent than my fenders.

The timmy with a 1458 chip realy sounds smooth and may be the ticket for low gain stuff.

I have a Matchless JJ and use a couple of overdrives with it. I use a Lovepedal Eternity (with a demeter compressor and a Lovepedal deluxe 60 clean boost) and it sounds chimey and great. For a little less chime and more drive I use a Fulldrive II mosfet edition stacked with a Cornish SS2 (again with the compressor and clean boost on). Even alone, I like both the FDII and the Eternity in the amp.

How is that JJ? What's the differences in that amp they've added as compared to their "flagship" DC30?

Right now I'm using a FT FD II 10th Ann., I also have a Catalinbread SCP which really pushes the front end nice. I have an RC Booster and BB Preamp that I'm really looking forward to putting on the board and seeing what happens.

I like my JJ Matchless. It takes pedals very well, very warm and EL 84 harmoncally rich. The difference between the JJ and the DC 30 are: the JJ is a single channel with Trem, the DC is 2 channel without trem. I have owned an SC 30 as well as my JJ and I sold the SC because the JJ did it better.
